Tugboat

Willemstad · Caracas Bay · Curacao

The Tugboat is one of Curacao's most beloved dive and snorkel sites, proving that a wreck does not need to be deep or large to be spectacular. This small tugboat sank over 30 years ago in Caracas Bay and now rests fully intact in just 5 metres of crystal-clear water, about 50 metres from shore at Tugboat Beach. What makes this wreck so special is the extraordinary growth that has claimed it. Every surface of the tugboat is smothered in colourful sponges, hard and soft corals, and marine organisms. Orange elephant ear sponges, purple tube sponges, and Christmas tree worms in every colour of the rainbow have transformed the hull into a living sculpture. The level of encrustation rivals wrecks many times its size and age, a testament to the nutrient-rich waters of the bay. The wreck attracts a constant parade of reef fish. Sergeant majors swirl around the superstructure, yellowtail snapper hover nearby, and trumpetfish hang vertically alongside the mast. Parrotfish graze on algae growing on the hull, while damselfish aggressively defend their tiny territories. The shallow depth means natural light floods the scene, making this one of the most photogenic wreck dives anywhere in the Caribbean. Access could not be simpler. Tugboat Beach in Caracas Bay is a short drive from Willemstad, with parking and a small entrance fee. Swimmers and snorkellers can reach the wreck easily, guided by three square steel buoys marking the location. No boat or advanced certification is needed. The sheltered bay means conditions are calm year-round, with no significant current. For divers visiting Curacao, the Tugboat is an essential stop that delivers outsized impact for its tiny scale.
