Tenggol Island - Tokong Timur
Dungun · Terengganu · Malaysia
Tokong Timur is the signature dive site of Tenggol Island, a rocky pinnacle rising from the South China Sea off the southern tip of the island in Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia. This small islet, topped by a lighthouse, extends dramatically underwater with massive boulders and coral-encrusted walls that attract an impressive diversity of marine life, including seasonal visits from the ocean's largest fish, the whale shark. The underwater topography of Tokong Timur is defined by enormous granite boulders that tumble down from the islet's base to a sandy bottom at approximately 28 to 30 meters. These boulders create a maze of swim-throughs, overhangs, and channels at multiple depth levels, every surface colonized by hard and soft corals in excellent health. Branching corals, table corals, and massive brain corals dominate the shallower sections, while deeper boulders are draped in soft corals and sea fans that sway in the mild currents. The marine life at Tokong Timur is abundant and varied. Hawksbill and green turtles are regular visitors, often spotted resting on coral ledges or feeding on sponges. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the deeper edges of the boulder field, and large groupers occupy territorial positions in the overhangs. Schools of batfish drift lazily around the pinnacle, barracuda form hunting parties in the mid-water, and angelfish and butterflyfish add color to the coral garden. The site's greatest fame comes from its whale shark encounters. From August through October, plankton blooms in the surrounding waters draw these magnificent animals to the Tenggol area, with Tokong Timur's south side being the most likely encounter zone. While sightings cannot be guaranteed, the island has built a solid reputation for whale shark encounters that draws divers from across Malaysia and beyond during the late-season months. Visibility at Tokong Timur typically ranges from 10 to 20 meters, with the best conditions from April through June when seas are calmest. The diving season runs from March to October, after which the northeast monsoon closes the island to visitors. For divers seeking a blend of healthy reefs, macro life, and the possibility of a whale shark encounter, Tokong Timur offers one of Peninsular Malaysia's most rewarding underwater experiences.

FAQ
When can I see whale sharks at Tokong Timur?
Whale shark sightings at Tokong Timur are most common from August to October, when plankton blooms attract these gentle giants to the waters around the pinnacle. Sightings are never guaranteed but Tenggol Island has one of the more reliable track records for whale shark encounters in Peninsular Malaysia. Diving the south side of Tokong Timur increases your chances.
How do I get to Tenggol Island?
Tenggol Island is accessed by boat from Dungun or Kuala Dungun on the Terengganu coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The boat ride takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. There is one resort on the island, Tenggol Coral Beach Resort, which operates its own dive center. The diving season runs from March to October, with the island typically closed during the northeast monsoon from November to February.
What skill level is needed for Tokong Timur?
Intermediate certification is recommended. The site features a small rocky island with underwater terrain dropping to 30 meters, and moderate currents are common. The most interesting features are at 15 to 25 meters depth. Good buoyancy control is important to avoid contact with the richly covered coral boulders. Advanced divers will enjoy the deeper sections where larger pelagic species are more frequently encountered.
