Silver Bank

Puerto Plata · Puerto Plata · Dominican Republic

Silver Bank is not a typical dive site -- it is a transformative wildlife encounter that redefines what the ocean can offer. Located approximately 130 kilometres north of the Dominican Republic in a shallow area of the Atlantic, this submerged bank of coral reef and sand rises from the deep ocean floor to create a protected nursery where thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales gather every winter to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves. Between January and April, an estimated 5,000 humpback whales converge on Silver Bank, making it one of the largest seasonal concentrations of these magnificent animals anywhere in the world. What makes Silver Bank truly exceptional is that it is one of only three places on Earth -- along with Tonga and the Dominican Republic's own Samana Bay -- where permitted operators can facilitate in-water encounters with humpback whales. These are not fleeting glimpses from a boat: you slip into the warm blue water with mask and snorkel and float quietly as 40-tonne whales drift past, often with curious newborn calves in tow. The encounters are conducted with strict protocols designed to minimise disturbance to the whales. Participants drift passively at the surface -- no scuba, no free diving, no chasing. The whales choose whether to approach, and when they do, the result is an experience of almost overwhelming emotional intensity. Eye contact with a mother humpback whale at ten metres distance, her calf tucked beneath her pectoral fin, is something that stays with you forever. Access to Silver Bank is exclusively via multi-day liveaboard trips, typically departing from Puerto Plata and lasting four to five days with an overnight crossing each way. Only a handful of operators hold permits from the Dominican government, so trips book out months in advance, especially for February and March when activity peaks. The liveaboard format means you spend multiple days on the bank, maximising your chance of extended whale encounters. While the whale encounters are the primary draw, Silver Bank also offers reef diving and snorkelling over healthy coral formations in the shallower sections of the bank. Bottlenose and spotted dolphins are frequently seen, and hawksbill turtles navigate the reef. But make no mistake -- you come to Silver Bank for the whales, and they deliver an experience that stands among the greatest wildlife encounters available to humans.

The encounters are called 'soft in-water interactions' and the whales set the distance.
