Shinkoku Maru

Weno · Chuuk State · Micronesia

The Shinkoku Maru is widely regarded as the finest wreck dive in Chuuk Lagoon and one of the best in the world. This 152-metre Japanese fleet oiler, built in 1939 by the Kawasaki Dockyard Company in Kobe, played a pivotal role in the Pacific War, notably refuelling the strike fleet that attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941. On 17 February 1944, during Operation Hailstone, American carrier-based aircraft pounded the Japanese base at Chuuk, and the Shinkoku Maru was struck by bombs from SBD dive-bombers off the USS Yorktown. A subsequent torpedo hit near the engine room sealed her fate, and she sank in the early hours of 18 February. Today the Shinkoku Maru rests upright on the lagoon floor, her bridge at just 12 metres depth and the main deck at around 30-40 metres. The upright position and intact superstructure make her an exceptional wreck for both exterior exploration and penetration diving. The engine room is considered one of the finest wreck penetrations accessible to recreational divers: catwalks, machinery, gauges, and pipes remain in situ, draped in soft corals that add ethereal beauty to the industrial archaeology. The doctor's office still contains glass medicine bottles on shelves, and the galley preserves dishes, sake cups, and cooking implements. The marine life colonizing the Shinkoku Maru is spectacular in its own right. A dense forest of soft corals, sponges, and hydroids covers every exposed surface of the superstructure, attracting clouds of butterflyfish, damselfish, and angelfish. Batfish hover around the masts, lionfish lurk under overhangs, and grey reef sharks regularly patrol the perimeter. Schools of barracuda circle the bow, and anemonefish have established colonies in anemones growing directly on the hull. Chuuk Lagoon's protected waters offer year-round diving with water temperatures of 28-30 degrees Celsius. Visibility in the lagoon typically ranges from 10 to 20 metres, occasionally better. The Vanuatu government declared the wreck off-limits for salvage in 1983, and the same cultural respect applies here: nothing should be touched or removed. Local operators run daily trips to the Shinkoku Maru from Weno Island, often pairing it with other Chuuk wrecks such as the Fujikawa Maru or San Francisco Maru.

FAQ

What certification do I need to dive the Shinkoku Maru wreck?

Advanced Open Water certification is the minimum requirement for diving the Shinkoku Maru, as the deck sits at around 30-40 metres. For penetration dives into the engine room or interior spaces, Wreck Diver certification is strongly recommended. The wreck is accessible for recreational divers on the upper sections from about 12 metres depth at the bridge, but deeper exploration requires proper training and equipment.

What can you see inside the Shinkoku Maru wreck?

The interior of the Shinkoku Maru is extraordinarily well preserved. The engine room contains intact machinery, catwalks, and gauges. The doctor's office still has medicine bottles on shelves. The galley retains dishes, sake bottles, and cooking utensils, while personal quarters reveal bunk beds and personal effects. The telegraph, helm, and navigation equipment remain in position on the bridge. It is one of the most artifact-rich wrecks accessible to recreational divers.

Is it safe to dive inside the Shinkoku Maru?

Penetration diving on the Shinkoku Maru is considered safe when done with an experienced local guide and proper training. The ship rests upright, passages are large, and silt conditions are generally manageable. Local operators know every compartment and guide divers through established routes with multiple exits. However, overhead environments always carry risk, and divers should carry redundant lights and maintain good buoyancy control.
