Sha'ab Samadai (Dolphin House)
Marsa Alam · Red Sea Governorate · Egypt
Sha'ab Samadai, known universally as Dolphin House, is one of the most enchanting marine sites in the Egyptian Red Sea. This horseshoe-shaped reef creates a natural lagoon of calm, shallow water that a resident pod of spinner dolphins has chosen as their daily resting place. Each morning, the dolphins swim into the lagoon from the open sea, socialising, resting, and nursing their young in the protected waters before heading back out to feed in the evening. The site has been a marine protected area since 2004, managed with a three-zone system designed to balance tourism with dolphin welfare. The inner lagoon, Zone A, is strictly off-limits, providing the dolphins with an undisturbed sanctuary. Zone B, the intermediate area, allows snorkelling only. Here, in waist-deep to shoulder-deep water over white sand and coral patches, visitors float quietly on the surface while spinner dolphins cruise beneath them, often approaching within arm's reach. The experience of a wild dolphin making eye contact and swimming alongside you is profoundly moving. Zone C encompasses the outer reef, which offers genuine scuba diving on walls dropping to around 18 metres. The reef is in excellent health, with robust hard coral cover, table corals, and a diverse community of reef fish. Green turtles are regularly sighted on the outer reef, along with blue-spotted stingrays, octopuses, moray eels, and schools of colourful butterflyfish and parrotfish. A maximum of 200 visitors per day are permitted at Sha'ab Samadai, and all boats must depart by 2pm to give the dolphins undisturbed afternoon rest. These regulations have been remarkably effective, and the dolphin population has remained stable and habituated to respectful human presence. The site is reached by boat from Marsa Alam, with the journey taking approximately 45 minutes. Calm waters and excellent visibility make conditions ideal for snorkellers and divers of all levels.

FAQ
Can I swim with the dolphins at Sha'ab Samadai?
Yes, but under strict regulations. Sha'ab Samadai has been a marine protected area since 2004 with a zoning system. Zone A around the inner lagoon is off-limits to protect the dolphins' resting area. Zone B allows snorkelling only, where dolphins often approach visitors on their own. Zone C is the outer reef open to scuba diving. A maximum of 200 visitors per day are permitted, and boats must leave by 2pm.
When is the best time to see dolphins at Sha'ab Samadai?
Spinner dolphins are present year-round, as the resident pod uses the sheltered lagoon as a daytime resting area. They typically arrive in the morning and rest in the shallow lagoon until early afternoon. Dolphins are most active and interactive when first arriving and before departing. The best encounters happen when visitors are calm and respectful, allowing dolphins to approach voluntarily.
What is the diving like at the outer reef?
The outer reef of Sha'ab Samadai is a rewarding dive in its own right, with walls dropping to 18 metres and a healthy mix of hard corals, table corals, and marine life including turtles, octopuses, moray eels, and colourful reef fish. While the dolphins are the main attraction, the reef quality is excellent and the calm conditions make it perfect for divers of all levels.
