Sha'ab Maksur
Hurghada · Red Sea · Egypt
Sha'ab Maksur is a horseshoe-shaped reef system in the northern Red Sea, about 90 minutes by boat from Hurghada, that offers one of the most complete diving experiences available at this latitude: pristine coral gardens in crystal-clear water, the strong possibility of dolphin encounters, and conditions calm enough for divers of all levels to enjoy. The reef's curved shape creates a sheltered lagoon on its eastern side, while the outer walls face the open sea and attract larger reef residents. The approach by boat often provides the first wildlife encounter before anyone enters the water. Spinner dolphins frequent the area, and pods of 20 to 50 animals are commonly spotted from the surface, their acrobatic spinning leaps visible from considerable distance. These dolphins rest in the calm lagoon waters during morning hours and will sometimes approach moored boats with curiosity. Inside the lagoon, the diving is gentle and rewarding. Sandy bottom at 8 to 15 metres is bordered by coral walls that rise to within a metre of the surface. Hard coral coverage is excellent, with massive Porites domes, branching Acropora fields, and the distinctive orange fire coral of the Red Sea creating varied structure. Masked butterflyfish and banner fish dart between coral heads, clouds of anthias hover above every promontory, and giant moray eels extend from their cleaning stations. The sheltered conditions make the lagoon ideal for less experienced divers, with no current and excellent visibility allowing relaxed exploration. But even experienced divers will find satisfaction in the coral health and fish diversity, and the possibility that a pod of dolphins may sweep through the lagoon during any given dive adds anticipation to every moment. The outer walls offer different character. Dropping to 25 metres on the western face, the wall supports large gorgonian fans, black coral trees, and significant populations of Napoleon wrasse and groupers. Bluespotted stingrays rest on sandy ledges, crocodilefish lie motionless on flat coral surfaces, and lionfish hunt in the shadows of overhangs. The outer wall occasionally receives current that brings nutrients and attracts schools of fusiliers and jacks. Sha'ab Maksur represents the northern Red Sea at its accessible best: reliable conditions, beautiful coral, charismatic marine life, and the magical possibility of sharing the water with dolphins. It proves that not all great diving requires extreme depth, powerful currents, or advanced certification.

FAQ
How far is Sha'ab Maksur from Hurghada?
Sha'ab Maksur is located approximately 90 minutes by boat north of Hurghada harbour. It is a regular stop on full-day boat trips from Hurghada and is included on many northern reef itineraries. Some operators combine it with nearby Sha'ab El Erg or Abu Hashish for a full day of diving. The journey passes through relatively sheltered waters making it comfortable even in moderate wind.
How likely am I to see dolphins at Sha'ab Maksur?
Spinner dolphins are resident in the area and sightings are common, particularly during morning hours when pods rest in the sheltered lagoon. However, interactions are not guaranteed on every visit. The dolphins choose whether to approach divers, and responsible operators maintain distance and allow the animals to initiate contact. Sightings from the boat during transit are very common even when underwater encounters do not occur.
Is Sha'ab Maksur suitable for beginners?
Yes, the sheltered lagoon area with mild currents and maximum depths of 12 to 15 metres is ideal for newly certified divers. The outer walls descend to 25 metres for more experienced divers seeking greater depth. The protected shape of the reef means wave action is minimal inside the lagoon. Visibility is typically excellent, reducing anxiety for less experienced divers.
