Shaab Claudia

Marsa Alam · Fury Shoal · Egypt

Shaab Claudia is the kind of dive site that makes you feel like an explorer rather than a tourist. This labyrinthine reef system in Egypt's Fury Shoal region offers an intricate network of swim-throughs, coral tunnels, and a signature natural cavern where sunlight pierces through a skylight in the reef ceiling, creating the kind of light show that underwater photographers travel thousands of miles to capture. The reef is a large oval structure with a sheltered interior of sandy channels and coral ridges, perforated with passages that allow divers to weave through the formation like navigating a coral maze. Everything sits at comfortable depths between 4 and 18 metres, and the absence of current in the sheltered interior makes navigation relaxed and unhurried. I entered the water on the eastern side and followed my guide through the first swim-through, a wide passage at 8 metres with walls encrusted in fire coral and soft coral tufts. The exit opened into a sandy clearing where a large green turtle lay resting, its shell dappled with remoras. It raised its head briefly, decided I was uninteresting, and resumed sleeping. The cavern is the centrepiece. We entered through a low wide opening and ascended slightly into a domed chamber perhaps 15 metres across. The ceiling rose to within two metres of the surface, and there in the roof was the skylight: a natural opening roughly three metres wide. The midday sun poured through it in a concentrated beam, illuminating the interior with an otherworldly blue glow. Thousands of glassfish swirled through the light shaft, their tiny bodies sparkling like living confetti. Lionfish hung motionless beneath the swarm, waiting for stragglers. Beyond the cavern, more swim-throughs connected sandy clearings where coral bommies rose from white sand. Each clearing was its own miniature ecosystem: an octopus den here, a cleaning station with moray eels there, crocodilefish lying flat and invisible on the sand. The shallow depths and excellent light made every detail visible without a torch. Shaab Claudia demonstrates that spectacle in diving need not come from depth or danger. Some of the most magical moments underwater happen in eight metres of water with the sun streaming through a hole in the roof.

FAQ

What makes Shaab Claudia's cavern special?

The cavern at Shaab Claudia features a natural opening in the reef ceiling that acts as a skylight. When the sun is at the right angle, particularly during midday, beams of light penetrate through the opening and illuminate the interior in dramatic shafts of blue-green light. The cavern is shallow at around 8 metres depth with a large air pocket at the surface, making it accessible and non-threatening even for inexperienced divers. Glassfish often swirl inside creating a silvery backdrop against the light beams.

Is Shaab Claudia suitable for beginners?

Shaab Claudia is one of the most beginner-friendly sites in the Fury Shoal region. Maximum depth is around 18 metres but all the signature features including the cavern and swim-throughs are between 4 and 12 metres. Currents are typically absent in the sheltered interior of the reef system. The swim-throughs are wide and short with visible exits, removing any sense of confinement. Many liveaboard operators use this site for the first dive of an itinerary to let guests ease into the trip.

How do I access Shaab Claudia?

Shaab Claudia is located in the Fury Shoal reef complex in the southern Egyptian Red Sea. It is accessible by liveaboard from Marsa Alam, Port Ghalib, or Hamata, and some day boats from Hamata can also reach it. The site is included on most southern itineraries of three days or longer. Mooring is typically on the eastern side of the reef where conditions are calmest, with the cavern and main swim-throughs accessible from there.
