Sattahip Naval Base Reef

Sattahip · Gulf of Thailand · Thailand

The Sattahip Naval Base Reef is one of Thailand's most unusual dive sites, a collection of coral reefs and artificial structures thriving in the restricted waters surrounding the Royal Thai Navy's principal base on the eastern seaboard. For decades, military security zones have inadvertently created a marine sanctuary where fishing boats cannot enter and coastal development has been kept at bay, resulting in reef health that seems improbable this close to Pattaya and Bangkok. Diving here requires coordination with authorized operators who hold naval permits, adding an element of exclusivity that keeps diver numbers minimal. The reef system consists of natural hard coral formations interspersed with decommissioned naval equipment that has been deliberately placed to create additional reef structure. Concrete blocks, old buoys, and metal frames have attracted colonizing corals and sponges, forming an artificial reef ecosystem that connects the natural outcrops. On my first descent, I was genuinely surprised by the coral health. Dense thickets of staghorn coral, boulder corals, and encrusting varieties cover every available surface, supporting a fish community that feels out of place for the upper Gulf. The site's signature residents are seahorses. The Sattahip area harbors one of the most reliable seahorse populations in Thailand, with thorny seahorses and tiger-tail seahorses found clinging to sea fans and gorgonians in relatively shallow water. Patient divers can spot multiple individuals on a single dive, a rarity that draws macro photographers from across the country. Cuttlefish and octopuses are abundant in the rubble zones between coral patches, and blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy areas between reef structures. The restricted nature of these waters means you will often dive with no other groups present. The dive profiles are generally easy, with gentle slopes and modest depths that make this an excellent site for underwater photography in calm, current-free conditions.

FAQ

How do I get permission to dive at Sattahip Naval Base Reef?

Access is arranged through authorized dive operators based in Pattaya or Sattahip who hold permits from the Royal Thai Navy. You cannot arrange access independently. Operators schedule trips in coordination with naval activities, and dives may be cancelled if military exercises are underway. Book through a licensed operator at least a few days in advance.

Is the visibility poor near Sattahip compared to southern Thailand?

Visibility in the upper Gulf of Thailand is generally lower than the Andaman Sea or lower Gulf, typically ranging from 5 to 15 meters. The best visibility occurs between December and March. While it cannot match the 30-meter visibility of Similan Islands diving, the exceptional marine life density and uncrowded conditions more than compensate.

What makes Sattahip reefs special despite being in the upper Gulf?

Decades of military restrictions have effectively created an unintentional marine reserve. While reefs near Pattaya have suffered from development and overfishing, Sattahip's reefs have been shielded by naval security zones. The result is surprisingly healthy hard coral coverage and fish populations that are significantly denser than at comparable upper Gulf sites.
