Redang Tanjung Tokong

Kuala Terengganu · Terengganu · Malaysia

Tanjung Tokong is a rocky headland on the southern coast of Pulau Redang, one of Malaysia's most celebrated marine park islands in the South China Sea. The site features a gently sloping reef that extends from the boulder-strewn shoreline to a sandy bottom at 20 metres, offering an accessible and richly populated dive suitable for all levels. The entire area falls within the Pulau Redang Marine Park, where fishing has been prohibited for decades, resulting in exceptional fish biomass. The shallow reef between 2 and 10 metres is dominated by dense hard coral coverage. Massive porites coral heads, some estimated to be several centuries old, form the reef's foundation. Between these ancient colonies, branching acropora corals create intricate thickets teeming with juvenile fish. Giant clams of impressive size are embedded in the reef, their mantles displaying electric blue and green patterns. The coral health here reflects the marine park's effective protection and serves as a benchmark for regional reef monitoring. Green turtles are the site's most charismatic inhabitants. Redang Island hosts one of peninsular Malaysia's most important green turtle nesting populations, and the turtles feed around the island's reefs year-round. Encounters during dives are virtually guaranteed, with turtles grazing on algae-covered rocks or resting on coral ledges. Hawksbill turtles are also regularly sighted, though less numerous than their green cousins. The deeper sections between 12 and 20 metres feature scattered granite boulders providing shelter for blacktip reef sharks, moray eels, and groupers. Schools of surgeonfish and parrotfish move across the reef in coordinated groups, while butterflyfish patrol the coral heads in pairs. The rocky promontory creates a mild current that brings nutrients, supporting clouds of fusiliers and anthias along the reef edge. Clear conditions and calm seas make this site a reliable choice throughout the March to October diving season.

FAQ

Is Tanjung Tokong suitable for snorkelling as well as diving?

Tanjung Tokong is excellent for both snorkelling and diving. The reef starts at just two metres depth close to the rocky shoreline, and the shallow areas have dense coral coverage and abundant fish life. Snorkellers can easily observe turtles, colourful reef fish, and giant clams without going deeper than three to four metres. The site is within the Pulau Redang Marine Park where all marine life is protected, and the fish are accustomed to humans, resulting in close encounters. Diving extends the experience to the deeper coral slopes and boulder formations down to 20 metres.

When is turtle nesting season at Redang Island?

Green turtles nest on Redang Island's beaches primarily between May and September, with peak nesting activity in June and July. While the nesting occurs on land at night, underwater turtle encounters are common throughout the diving season from March to October. Turtles feed on seagrass and algae around the reefs and are frequently seen by divers and snorkellers at Tanjung Tokong. The Malaysian government runs a turtle conservation programme on the island and some beaches are closed to visitors during nesting season to protect the eggs.
