Protea Banks
Margate · KwaZulu-Natal · South Africa
Protea Banks is a submerged fossilized reef located approximately 7.5 kilometres offshore from Shelly Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Stretching six kilometres in length and 800 metres wide, this deep reef system sits at an average depth of 30 metres, fully immersed in the powerful Agulhas Current, one of the fastest ocean currents on Earth. The combination of depth, current, and nutrient-rich water creates what many consider the most intense shark diving experience in the world. The reef's topography features dramatic pinnacles, caves, gullies, and ledges that provide shelter for an astonishing array of shark species. During the spring and summer months from September through January, massive schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks numbering up to 2,500 individuals congregate at the reef for their annual migration and courtship rituals. Tiger sharks patrol the deeper channels year-round, while bull sharks and oceanic blacktip sharks are common throughout summer. Winter brings ragged-tooth sharks and giant guitarfish aggregations that are unique to this site, making Protea Banks one of only a handful of places on the planet where guitarfish gather in groups. Every dive at Protea Banks is a deep drift dive, with the Agulhas Current dictating the pace and direction. Divers are dropped at specific points along the reef and carried by the current over pinnacles and through gullies, scanning the blue water for approaching sharks. The current speed can vary from gentle to extreme within minutes, and thermoclines can cause rapid temperature drops. This unpredictability is part of the thrill, but it demands solid experience and comfort in deep, open-water conditions. Protea Banks is exclusively an advanced dive site. The minimum depth is 27 metres, with many popular sites like Sand Shark Gully reaching 40 metres. Visibility averages 10 to 20 metres but can exceed 30 metres on optimal days. Dive boats launch from Shelly Beach, and operators assess conditions daily to select the safest entry points. For experienced divers seeking raw, unfiltered encounters with the ocean's apex predators, Protea Banks delivers an experience that few sites on Earth can match.
