Panorama Reef
Safaga · Red Sea Governorate · Egypt
Panorama Reef is widely considered the crown jewel of Safaga diving and one of the finest reef dives in the Egyptian Red Sea. This massive oval-shaped reef sits about one hour by boat from Safaga port, rising from the deep blue to within a few metres of the surface, its walls plunging steeply on all sides into the abyss. The reef's signature feature is its southern plateau, a broad shelf extending from the reef at 25 to 35 metres depth. This plateau is carpeted in dense soft corals -- vivid purples, reds, and oranges -- interspersed with enormous sea fans that sway in the gentle current. Grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks cruise the plateau's edge, and it is not uncommon to see several sharks on a single dive. Eagle rays glide past in the blue, schools of tuna and barracuda patrol the periphery, and dolphins occasionally pass through, delighting divers with their curiosity. The eastern and western walls are equally impressive. Sheer drop-offs descend beyond recreational diving limits, with overhangs and small caverns punctuating the vertical faces. Hard corals dominate the upper sections, transitioning to soft corals and gorgonians as depth increases. Napoleon wrasses, enormous groupers, and schools of surgeonfish are constant companions along these walls. The reef top, at 3 to 5 metres, provides a perfect end to any dive and a superb safety stop environment. Pristine hard coral gardens host butterflyfish, angelfish, and territorial triggerfish, while octopuses hide in the coral heads. The shallow water is bathed in sunlight, and on calm days the visibility seems to stretch forever. Panorama Reef is typically dived as a drift, with the boat dropping divers at one end and collecting them at the other. The standard plan involves descending to the southern plateau for the deep portion of the dive, then ascending along the wall and finishing on the reef top. Multiple dives are needed to fully explore this impressive reef, and many liveaboards include at least two dives at Panorama on their itineraries.

FAQ
What makes Panorama Reef one of the best dives near Safaga?
Panorama Reef is a large oval-shaped reef about one hour by boat from Safaga, offering dramatic wall diving on all sides. The southern plateau at 25 to 35 metres is particularly exceptional, covered in dense soft corals and sea fans with regular shark and ray encounters. The reef's size means it can be dived many times without repeating the same route.
What certification do I need for Panorama Reef?
Open Water divers can enjoy the shallower sections and reef top, but Advanced Open Water certification is recommended to access the best features, particularly the southern plateau at 25 to 35 metres and the deeper wall sections. Currents are usually moderate, making drift diving comfortable for intermediate-level divers.
When is the best time to dive Panorama Reef?
March through November provides the best combination of warm water, calm seas, and good visibility. The reef is diveable year-round, but winter months can bring rougher surface conditions for the boat journey from Safaga. Visibility is typically excellent at 20 to 40 metres.
