Pangangan Island
Calape · Bohol · Philippines
Pangangan Island is the kind of dive site that makes you understand why the early pioneers fell in love with Philippine diving. Located off the northwest coast of Bohol in the Cebu Strait, this small island sits far from Panglao-based dive tourism and rewards the effort of reaching it with reef quality that has become increasingly rare in the Visayas. I arranged a boat from Calape on a day when no other operators were heading there, which turned out to be every day. We had the entire island to ourselves. Dropping in on the eastern side, I was immediately struck by the coral coverage. The reef flat begins at 3 meters with dense Acropora fields in pristine condition. Below 8 meters, the reef transitions to a diverse slope with table corals, massive Porites heads, and scattered soft coral clusters. The fish life reflects the absence of fishing pressure. Schools of fusiliers stream along the reef edge in formations so dense they briefly block the light. Surgeonfish graze in herds, large snappers and sweetlips occupy coral overhangs, and groupers peer from holes with less wariness than anywhere else in the Visayas. The abundance is not about rare species but seeing common reef fish in uncommon numbers and sizes. Reef sharks make occasional appearances along the deeper slopes. Blacktip reef sharks patrol at 20 to 30 meters, and giant trevally hunt along the drop-off. Hawksbill and green turtles rest in coral alcoves, schools of batfish hang near the surface, and cuttlefish hover over the rubble zone. The reef structure varies around the island's circumference. The eastern side features gentle coral slopes, the northern point drops more steeply into the strait creating a wall section, and the western side offers scattered bommies for macro photography. For divers willing to venture beyond Panglao, Pangangan is a revelation of what uncrowded Philippine diving looks like.

FAQ
Why is Pangangan Island rarely dived?
Pangangan Island is located off the northwest coast of Bohol, away from the main tourism hub of Panglao Island on the southern coast. Most Bohol diving is concentrated around Panglao, Balicasag Island, and nearby areas. Pangangan requires a longer boat journey from the nearest port of Calape, and very few dive operators include it in their regular schedules. This isolation is precisely what preserves its reef quality, as the corals and marine life have been largely spared the pressures of heavy dive tourism.
How do I arrange diving at Pangangan Island?
Diving at Pangangan Island typically requires coordination with a dive operator willing to make the longer boat trip from Calape or Tagbilaran. Some operators in Panglao offer custom trips to Pangangan on request, though these cost more than standard Balicasag excursions due to the distance. Alternatively, a few small local operators in the Calape area can arrange trips. It is advisable to contact operators well in advance as these are not scheduled daily trips.
What makes Pangangan different from Balicasag Island?
While Balicasag is justifiably famous for its walls and marine sanctuary, it receives heavy daily dive traffic that has impacted some areas. Pangangan offers a contrast: similar reef quality with far less human pressure. The reef structure at Pangangan is more varied, with gentle slopes transitioning to walls in some sections and coral garden plateaus in others. The fish life tends to be denser and less wary of divers, and encounters with reef sharks and large pelagics are more common than at heavily visited Balicasag.
