Osezaki
Numazu · Izu Peninsula · Japan
Osezaki is the jewel of Japan's Izu Peninsula diving scene, a rocky cape jutting into Suruga Bay that offers some of the richest temperate marine life in the northwest Pacific. Located just two hours from Tokyo, Osezaki serves as the go-to dive site for the Japanese capital's large diving community and has developed into one of the most thoroughly studied underwater environments in the country. What makes Osezaki scientifically fascinating is its position at the crossover between temperate and tropical marine ecosystems. The warm Kuroshio Current brings tropical species north during summer, creating an unusual mix of warm and cold water creatures on the same reef. Tropical nudibranchs and anemonefish share space with temperate species found nowhere else in the tropics. The macro life is exceptional — Japanese pygmy seahorses, multiple frogfish species, and a staggering diversity of nudibranchs make this a mecca for underwater macro photographers. During summer months, hammerhead sharks are occasionally spotted when warm currents push particularly close to shore. The site is accessed via a shore entry over rocky terrain, descending a gentle slope to a rocky reef environment that drops to 30 meters. The seasonal variation in water temperature — from a chilly 16 degrees Celsius in winter to a comfortable 26 degrees in summer — means conditions and marine life change dramatically throughout the year, giving regular visitors a constantly evolving dive experience. Summer offers the best combination of warm water, good visibility, and tropical species visitors, making June through September the prime season. The infrastructure is well-developed, with multiple dive shops, air fills, and facilities supporting a steady stream of weekend divers from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
