Netrani Island

Murudeshwar · Karnataka · India

Netrani Island, often called Pigeon Island locally, is a tiny heart-shaped rock rising from the Arabian Sea about 19 kilometres off Karnataka's coastline near Murudeshwar. Despite its diminutive size above water, this uninhabited island conceals one of India's most dramatic underwater landscapes — sheer walls plunging from the surface to 40 metres and beyond. The walls are the main attraction, and they deliver spectacularly. Dropping nearly vertically, the rock face is adorned with soft corals, sponges, and gorgonian fans. Schools of fusiliers and snappers swarm along the walls in dense clouds, while giant trevally and barracuda patrol the blue water beyond the reef edge. The wall dives here have a raw, exhilarating quality that rewards experienced divers comfortable with moderate currents and depth management. What truly sets Netrani apart is its pelagic action. Blacktip reef sharks are regular residents, cruising the deeper wall sections. Between November and February, whale sharks visit, drawn by seasonal plankton concentrations. These encounters tend to happen near the surface and are among the most thrilling wildlife experiences available to divers in India. Napoleon wrasse, large groupers, and sea snakes round out the cast of larger species. Visibility is pleasantly variable — on good days it reaches 25 to 30 metres, transforming the wall into a vast vertical canvas of colour. Less favourable conditions may reduce it to 10 metres, but the density of marine life compensates. Water temperatures range from 24 to 29 degrees Celsius. The diving season runs from October through May, with the monsoon shutting access from June through September. Dive operators based in Murudeshwar run day trips to the island. Netrani remains relatively unknown outside India's diving community, but those who make the journey invariably describe it as one of the country's finest dives.

FAQ

When can I see whale sharks at Netrani Island?

Whale shark sightings at Netrani Island are most common between November and February, with peak encounters in December and January. These sightings are not guaranteed and occur primarily on the surface or in the shallow water column. Dive operators from Murudeshwar monitor conditions and will alert divers when whale sharks are spotted in the area. The best chances coincide with plankton blooms that attract these filter feeders.

How far is Netrani Island from the mainland?

Netrani Island lies approximately 19 kilometres off the coast of Karnataka, near the town of Murudeshwar. The boat ride from Murudeshwar harbour takes about 60 to 90 minutes depending on sea conditions. Most operators depart early in the morning for a full day of diving with two to three dives. The island is uninhabited, so all diving is day-trip based with no overnight options.

Is Netrani Island suitable for night diving?

Night diving at Netrani is extremely rare due to the island's remote location and the logistical challenges of remaining offshore after dark. Most operators focus on daytime diving with morning departures and afternoon returns. The best diving occurs during the morning dives when visibility tends to be highest and marine life is most active along the walls.
