Nassimo Thila
Male · North Male Atoll · Maldives
Nassimo Thila is one of North Male Atoll's premier dive sites, a submerged reef whose top sits at eight metres and whose sloping sides descend to thirty metres, with overhangs and cavities that host some of the most spectacular soft coral displays accessible from the Maldivian capital. Its location within easy reach of Male's airport resorts makes it a convenient introduction to Maldivian thila diving, yet the quality of marine life here rivals sites in far more remote atolls. Our dhoni reached the site in twenty-five minutes from a North Male resort. The guide briefed us to descend on the northeastern edge where the current was pushing clean blue water against the thila. We dropped to twenty metres on the exposed face and immediately encountered the resident shark school. Twelve grey reef sharks cruised in loose formation along the reef edge, their bodies angled slightly into the current, maintaining position with minimal effort. They paid our group no attention, focused entirely on the column of fusiliers streaming past in the flow. Rounding the thila to the northern face, the overhangs began. At sixteen metres, a ledge extended three metres outward, its underside completely covered in soft corals of such intense blue that they seemed to generate their own light. Between the blue colonies, purple soft corals and yellow sponges filled every gap, creating a colour palette unique in my diving experience. Giant morays extended from crevices in the overhang roof, their mouths gaping at cleaning stations where small wrasse worked methodically. Deeper, at twenty-four metres, a spotted eagle ray glided beneath us, its wings beating in slow motion as it cruised the sandy channel between the thila and the next reef structure. Napoleon wrasses of impressive size patrolled the mid-water, their curiosity bringing them close before they banked away with a flick of their broad tails. The thila top at eight metres offered a different experience for the safety stop period. Hard coral coverage was healthy with colonies of branching and massive corals supporting schools of bannerfish and surgeonfish. Looking outward into the blue, the sharks continued their patrol below, and the soft coral overhangs glowed with colour even from above. Nassimo Thila demonstrates why the Maldives' thila dive format works so well. A compact underwater structure concentrates life at every depth level, delivers reliable shark encounters, and provides photographic opportunities that would take multiple dives at a less structured site. Its accessibility from Male is a bonus that makes it practical for short stays and liveaboard transition days alike.

FAQ
How far is Nassimo Thila from Male and how do I dive it?
Nassimo Thila is located in North Male Atoll approximately 20 kilometres from Male International Airport. It is accessible by dhoni boat from numerous resort islands in North Male Atoll, with typical boat rides of 20 to 45 minutes depending on your resort location. Day-trip dive operators based near the airport can reach it within 30 minutes. Most liveaboard itineraries include a North Male Atoll dive on departure or arrival day, making Nassimo Thila a convenient first or last dive of a safari trip.
What makes a thila different from other reef types in the Maldives?
A thila in Maldivian terminology is a submerged reef or pinnacle whose top does not reach the surface, typically sitting between 5 and 15 metres below the waterline. Unlike farus which form ring-shaped reefs visible at low tide, thilas are completely underwater and often feature steep sides, overhangs, and caves. Their submerged position in channels and atoll interiors means they intercept currents and attract concentrated marine life. Nassimo Thila's top sits at around 8 metres and its base reaches 30 metres, creating a compact underwater mountain with diverse habitat zones.
What current conditions are ideal for Nassimo Thila?
Nassimo Thila is best dived on a mild to moderate incoming current from the northeast, which brings clear oceanic water and activates the sharks and pelagic fish. Dive guides descend on the current-exposed side where sharks gather, then drift to the sheltered side where the overhangs and soft corals provide the photographic highlights. On slack tide the sharks may be less active but conditions are easier. Strong current days can make the site challenging and guides will adjust the dive plan to keep the group in the thila's lee.
