Moyo Island
Sumbawa Besar · Sumbawa · Indonesia
Moyo Island is Indonesia's quiet masterpiece, a marine nature reserve off northwest Sumbawa offering diving of extraordinary quality in conditions of almost surreal tranquility. While attention focuses on Komodo to the east and Bali to the west, Moyo sits between them largely unnoticed, its protected reefs growing in undisturbed splendor beneath waters so clear they dissolve the boundary between air and sea. I arrived by speedboat from Sumbawa Besar on a flat-calm morning. There was no dive center, no queue of boats, no other divers gearing up. A local guide led us to a site on the southern coast where the reef begins at 3 meters and slopes to 30 meters. Entering the water, the visibility was immediately stunning: well over 30 meters, with the white sand bottom reflecting light upward in rippling patterns. The coral gardens are what Indonesia's reefs must have looked like fifty years ago. Hard coral coverage is dense and diverse, with massive table corals, branching Acropora forming intricate thickets, and brain corals of ancient size. Giant clams display iridescent mantles of blue, green, and gold. The absence of blast fishing and coral trampling is evident -- nothing is broken, bleached, or dead. Marine life reflects the reserve's protection. Hawksbill and green turtles are present in healthy breeding numbers, resting in alcoves and feeding with the calm behavior of animals that have never learned to fear humans. Napoleon wrasse cruise in pairs, bumphead parrotfish appear at dawn, reef sharks patrol deeper slopes, and eagle rays glide over sandy areas. The diving pace is deliberately unhurried. Without strong currents, each dive becomes observation rather than navigation. The silence of a reef with no other divers, no boat engines, and no fishing activity creates an acoustic environment where the sounds of the reef itself become audible. Moyo delivers diving of rare purity for those willing to seek it.

FAQ
What is the marine reserve status of Moyo Island?
Moyo Island was designated as a Nature Reserve (Cagar Alam) by the Indonesian government, covering approximately 6,000 hectares of land and surrounding marine areas. The reserve status restricts fishing and development, which has preserved the coral reefs in exceptional condition. Diving is permitted with coordination through local guides or dive operators who hold reserve access. The protection extends to the terrestrial environment, where the island supports populations of deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species.
How do I reach Moyo Island for diving?
Moyo Island is located off the northwest coast of Sumbawa in West Nusa Tenggara province. The nearest town is Sumbawa Besar, accessible by flights from Bali or Lombok. From Sumbawa Besar, a boat to Moyo Island takes approximately one hour. A luxury resort operates on the island and offers diving services. Alternatively, some liveaboard vessels include Moyo Island on itineraries between Bali and Komodo. Independent arrangements can be made through local fishermen in Sumbawa Besar, though advance planning is essential.
How does Moyo Island compare to Komodo for diving?
Moyo Island offers a fundamentally different diving experience from Komodo. While Komodo is known for strong currents, pelagic encounters, and adrenaline-charged drift dives, Moyo provides calm, clear waters over pristine coral gardens. The trade-off is fewer big-animal encounters but superior coral health, better visibility, and a meditative pace that Komodo's high-energy sites cannot match. Many divers who have experienced both consider Moyo a welcome complement to Komodo's intensity.
