Miyaru Kandu
Felidhoo · Vaavu Atoll · Maldives
Miyaru Kandu is the crown jewel of Vaavu Atoll and one of the Maldives' most celebrated shark dives. Translated from Dhivehi as 'Shark Channel,' this dramatic ocean passage on the northeastern rim of the atoll lives up to its name with reliable encounters with large aggregations of grey reef sharks that few other sites in the Indian Ocean can match. The dive site centers on a wide channel cut through the atoll reef, where the outer wall drops from a reef top at around 8 meters to a sandy floor at 35 meters. The magic happens at the channel's ocean-facing corner, where incoming currents create a natural amphitheater for pelagic predators. During optimal conditions, divers descend to the corner at 20 to 25 meters, deploy reef hooks, and settle in to watch the show. Grey reef sharks patrol in disciplined formations, sometimes 30 or more strong, their silver bodies banking against the blue water with mesmerizing precision. Beyond the grey reef sharks, Miyaru Kandu delivers an impressive supporting cast. Scalloped hammerhead sharks occasionally appear in the deeper water beyond the channel lip, particularly during the northeast monsoon from January through April. Massive schools of dogtooth tuna and giant trevally slash through baitfish clouds, while spotted eagle rays cruise past at mid-water. Napoleon wrasse of impressive size are regular fixtures, and large barracuda schools hover in cylindrical formations near the reef edge. The channel walls themselves reward closer inspection. Overhangs at 15 to 20 meters shelter clusters of soft corals, sea fans, and enormous barrel sponges. Whitetip reef sharks rest in sandy pockets between coral heads, and giant moray eels peer from their crevice homes. The reef top, accessible during safety stops, features healthy hard coral coverage with butterflyfish, triggerfish, and surgeonfish providing a colorful contrast to the blue-water drama below. Miyaru Kandu demands advanced diving skills. Currents can exceed two knots, and the exposed oceanic position means conditions can change rapidly. The reward for those with the experience is a world-class shark dive that ranks among the finest channel dives in the Maldives archipelago.

FAQ
Why is Miyaru Kandu famous for sharks?
Miyaru Kandu translates to 'Shark Channel' in Dhivehi, and the name is well earned. The channel's position on the northeast corner of Vaavu Atoll funnels strong incoming currents that carry plankton and nutrients, creating a natural feeding station. Grey reef sharks gather in enormous numbers on the channel corner, sometimes exceeding 30 individuals in a single dive. The strong current also attracts scalloped hammerheads during the northeast monsoon.
What are the current conditions like at Miyaru Kandu?
Currents at Miyaru Kandu are typically strong and can be very powerful during spring tides. Incoming currents provide the best shark encounters as predators face into the flow to feed. Divers use reef hooks to anchor themselves at the channel corner and observe the action. Outgoing currents are generally less productive for shark sightings but can still offer exciting drift diving.
How do I get to Miyaru Kandu?
Miyaru Kandu is located in the northeast of Vaavu Atoll, accessible by liveaboard or safari boat from Male. The journey takes approximately 2 to 3 hours by speedboat. Most divers visit as part of a multi-day liveaboard itinerary covering Vaavu and neighboring atolls. A few resort-based dive centers in Vaavu Atoll also run day trips to the channel.
