Mirbat
Salalah · Dhofar · Oman
Mirbat is a small fishing town on the coast of Oman's Dhofar region, approximately 70 kilometers east of Salalah, and home to some of the most exciting and least-known diving in the Arabian Peninsula. The marine environment here is profoundly influenced by the khareef — the annual monsoon that sweeps across Dhofar from June through September, creating a massive nutrient upwelling that transforms these waters into one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the region. When the khareef subsides in October, the diving season begins in spectacular fashion. The nutrient-rich waters attract manta rays that come to feed on the dense plankton concentrations, their graceful forms gliding through the green-tinged water in groups of up to a dozen. Whale sharks follow the same food source, and encounters with these gentle giants are possible from October through January. Humpback whales — members of the isolated and endangered Arabian Sea population — are occasionally spotted offshore. The reef itself is a unique Arabian Sea ecosystem, with corals, cuttlefish, lobsters, and colorful nudibranchs providing constant interest between the pelagic highlights. Diving in Mirbat is refreshingly uncrowded and unpretentious. The few dive operations cater to a small number of visiting divers, offering personalized attention and flexibility. The sites are generally shallow with mild currents, making them accessible to beginners, though the visibility is more variable than tropical reef destinations — ranging from fair to good depending on the plankton density. This trade-off is precisely what makes the diving special: the same nutrient richness that reduces visibility is what attracts the mantas and whale sharks. Mirbat represents frontier diving in one of the world's most underexplored marine regions.
