Middle Garden

Sharm El Sheikh · South Sinai · Egypt

Middle Garden is one of Sharm El Sheikh's most beloved shore dives, a pristine coral garden on the coast south of Na'ama Bay that combines accessibility with genuine beauty. Sitting between its more famous neighbours Near Garden and Far Garden, this site offers what many consider the finest hard coral formations of the three, a natural coral amphitheatre that draws divers back repeatedly, and a population of resident green turtles that have become one of Sharm's most reliable wildlife encounters. The shore entry is straightforward, descending metal steps to a small beach from where a sandy channel leads through the shallow reef flat to the drop-off. Within minutes of entering the water, the reef garden opens up in a panorama of colour and structure that encapsulates everything the Red Sea does well: crystalline visibility, vibrant coral in perfect health, and fish life in abundance. The signature feature is the coral amphitheatre, a natural circular formation at 12 to 15 metres where the reef has grown into a bowl-shaped arena surrounded by massive table corals and brain corals. Entering this natural arena, divers find themselves encircled by coral walls alive with anthias clouds in pink and orange, banner fish in formation, and the occasional Napoleon wrasse patrolling through with regal indifference. Green turtles are the site's most charismatic residents. At least four to six individuals maintain territories around Middle Garden, resting on favoured coral heads and feeding on algae-covered rocks. Years of respectful diver presence have habituated these animals to human company, and they often allow approach to remarkably close range. Watching a large green turtle sleeping on a coral head, its eyes closed and flippers tucked, is a moment of genuine connection with wild marine life. The reef architecture between the entry and the amphitheatre offers extensive exploration. Porites domes two metres across provide shelter for moray eels and cleaning shrimp. Table Acropora corals extend in tiers, their surfaces alive with damselfish territories. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy patches, erupting in a cloud of sand when approached too closely. Emperor angelfish in their bold blue and yellow stripes patrol the reef faces. Middle Garden is not extreme diving. Its maximum depth of 22 metres, absence of current, and benign conditions make it suitable for all levels. But this accessibility is its strength, not its limitation. The coral health here is exceptional by any global standard, the turtle encounters are genuinely moving, and the amphitheatre formation creates a sense of underwater architecture that more demanding sites often lack. This is the Red Sea at its most welcoming.

FAQ

Where is Middle Garden in relation to other Sharm sites?

Middle Garden sits between Near Garden to the south and Far Garden to the north along the Ras Um Sid coastline in Sharm El Sheikh. All three Gardens are shore-accessible from the same stretch of coast, though most divers access them by boat from Na'ama Bay. The site is approximately 10 minutes drive from Na'ama Bay or 5 minutes from Hadaba district.

Is Middle Garden good for beginner divers?

Excellent for beginners. The site features a gentle sandy entry, mild to no current, maximum depth of 22 metres with most interest between 5 and 15 metres, and crystal-clear visibility that builds confidence. Many dive schools use the shallower sections for Open Water training dives while offering certified beginners the deeper coral garden as a reward dive. The turtle encounters alone make this special for new divers.

Are the turtles reliable sightings?

Yes, multiple green turtles are resident at Middle Garden and sightings are near-certain on any dive. The turtles have become habituated to the presence of divers over many years and often allow approach to within two metres while they rest on coral heads or feed on algae. Early morning dives before the boat traffic arrives offer the most relaxed encounters. Responsible divers maintain a respectful distance and never touch or chase the animals.
