Misool - Magic Mountain
Sorong · Raja Ampat · Indonesia
Magic Mountain in Misool is one of Raja Ampat's most legendary dive sites — a submerged pinnacle that rises from the depths to within 8 metres of the surface, creating an oasis of marine life in the open water. The pinnacle's summit is carpeted in vibrant soft corals in every shade of pink, purple, orange, and yellow, while gorgonian sea fans spread their nets to catch passing plankton. This rich food supply attracts manta rays that visit the pinnacle as a cleaning station, circling patiently while small cleaner wrasse attend to parasites. On a good day, multiple mantas may be present simultaneously, creating unforgettable encounters as they glide overhead. Below the mantas, the pinnacle walls are alive with reef fish — dense schools of fusiliers, anthias, and damselfish pulse and shift like a living curtain. Wobbegong sharks rest on ledges, their tasselled bodies perfectly camouflaged against the coral. Pygmy seahorses cling to muricella fans, and occasional visits from grey reef sharks add to the pelagic excitement. The currents can be moderate and shift with the tides, so good buoyancy control and drift diving experience are important. Descending onto the pinnacle top and hooking in during strong current allows divers to watch the show as pelagic visitors parade past. Magic Mountain encapsulates everything that makes Raja Ampat a top-tier diving destination.
