Lima Rock
Khasab · Musandam Governorate · Oman
Lima Rock is the standout dive site of Oman's Musandam Peninsula, a remote and stunningly beautiful region often called the Norway of Arabia for its dramatic fjord-like inlets. This small rocky island sits about 1.5 kilometres off Ras Lima, its sheer cliffs continuing underwater to create one of the most exciting wall dives in the Gulf of Oman. The underwater topography is dramatic. On the north side, the rock slopes from the surface to around 25 metres through a series of coral-covered ledges and boulder fields. The south side is more extreme, with near-vertical cliffs dropping sharply and then transitioning to a boulder and scree slope that runs steeply to the sandy bottom at 30 metres and beyond. Both sides are decorated with healthy coral growth -- hard corals on the shallower sections give way to soft corals, sea fans, and sponges in the deeper zones. Lima Rock's position near the open waters of the Strait of Hormuz brings a unique mix of marine life. The headline attraction is the whale shark, which visits Musandam waters primarily from September to November during plankton blooms. These gentle giants can be encountered at the surface or during dives, and Lima Rock's proximity to deep water makes it one of the best spots for such encounters. Green and hawksbill turtles are common year-round, often resting on the reef or feeding on the coral-encrusted slopes. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, eagle rays cruise past the wall, and large schools of barracuda and trevally mass in the water column. Closer to the reef, cuttlefish display their extraordinary colour-changing abilities, moray eels peer from crevices, and nudibranchs add miniature splashes of colour. The nutrient-rich waters support dense plankton that can reduce visibility but also feeds the rich food chain that makes Lima Rock so productive. The setting above water is as remarkable as below. The boat journey from Khasab passes through the dramatic khors -- deep fjord-like inlets carved into the limestone mountains, where dolphins frequently race the boats and pristine beaches line the shores. Lima Rock diving is typically combined with other Musandam sites for a full day trip, and the remote, uncrowded nature of the diving adds to its appeal.

FAQ
When can I see whale sharks at Lima Rock?
Whale sharks are most frequently spotted in the Musandam waters from September to November, when plankton blooms attract these gentle giants. Sightings are not guaranteed, but Lima Rock's position near the open waters of the Strait of Hormuz gives it some of the best chances in the region. Encounters can also occur at other times of year.
How do I get to Lima Rock?
Lima Rock is accessed by boat from Khasab, the main town in Oman's Musandam Peninsula. The boat ride takes about 30 to 45 minutes through the dramatic fjord-like inlets called khors that make Musandam famous. Several dive operators in Khasab offer trips to Lima Rock, often combined with other Musandam dive sites.
What is the difference between Lima Rock North and Lima Rock South?
Lima Rock is a small rocky island about 1.5 km off Ras Lima, and the north and south sides offer different experiences. The north side has depths from 3 to 25 metres with more gentle slopes and coral gardens, suitable for all levels. The south side is steeper, reaching 30 to 45 metres, and is recommended for intermediate to advanced divers. Both sides feature excellent marine life.
