Le Sec Jaune

Saint-Leu · Reunion · France

Le Sec Jaune, often called the Yellow Pinnacle, is universally recognized as the signature dive of Reunion Island, a French overseas territory in the southwestern Indian Ocean. Located within the Natural Marine Reserve off the west coast near Saint-Leu, this volcanic underwater formation rises from considerable depth to within five metres of the surface, creating a concentrated ecosystem of extraordinary richness that draws divers from around the world. The pinnacle's structure offers multiple diving experiences in a single site. The shallow plateau between 5 and 10 metres is bathed in sunlight and covered with healthy hard corals, providing a colourful safety stop environment. Below this, the main reef section between 15 and 25 metres is where Le Sec Jaune truly reveals its character. The volcanic rock provides countless crevices, overhangs, and small caves that harbour an incredible diversity of life. What makes this site legendary is the mimicry: scorpionfish blend perfectly with the reef surface, stonefish are virtually invisible on the rocky bottom, leaf scorpionfish sway gently like debris, and frogfish sit motionless among sponges. Patient divers with sharp eyes are rewarded with discoveries that others swim right past. The outer face of the pinnacle drops away dramatically beyond 25 metres into a wall that descends past 60 metres. This vertical section is draped in colourful soft corals and sea fans, with groupers, barracuda, and occasional pelagic visitors patrolling the blue water. Green and hawksbill turtles are commonly encountered throughout the site, often resting under ledges on the plateau or cruising the wall edge. Moray eels, lobsters, and a rich variety of invertebrates complete the biodiversity picture. Le Sec Jaune benefits from Reunion's unique position in the Indian Ocean, where tropical and subtropical species overlap. From June to October, the haunting songs of humpback whales, which come to Reunion's waters to breed and calve, can be heard during dives, adding an otherworldly soundtrack to the experience. Visibility typically ranges from 15 to 30 metres, with water temperatures between 23 and 28 degrees Celsius. Boat rides from Saint-Leu or Saint-Gilles take around 15 minutes. For any diver visiting Reunion, Le Sec Jaune is not merely recommended, it is essential.

FAQ

Why is Le Sec Jaune considered the best dive in Reunion?

Le Sec Jaune is consistently rated as the signature dive of Reunion Island. The site is a volcanic pinnacle that rises from deeper water, creating a compact ecosystem where an extraordinary density and variety of marine life concentrates. The plateau section is particularly rich in flora and fauna, with remarkable fish mimicry species that reward careful observation. It combines reef, wall, and cave dive elements in a single site.

What depth is Le Sec Jaune and who can dive it?

The top of the pinnacle starts at around 5-10 metres, with the main reef plateau at 15-25 metres. A dramatic drop-off on one side descends beyond 60 metres. Recreational divers typically explore the 5-25 metre range, which is accessible to Open Water certified divers with some experience. Advanced divers can explore the deeper wall sections. The site is within the Natural Marine Reserve of Reunion.

When can you see humpback whales while diving in Reunion?

Humpback whales visit Reunion's waters from June to October for breeding and calving.
