Kuda Rah Thila
Kuda Rah · South Ari Atoll · Maldives
Kuda Rah Thila holds a special place in Maldivian diving, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful underwater pinnacles in the entire archipelago. This protected marine area sits approximately one kilometer south of Kuda Rah Island in South Ari Atoll, rising from a sandy bottom at 30 meters to a reef crest at 10 to 12 meters below the surface. What sets it apart from the hundreds of other thilas in the Maldives is the extraordinary quality and density of its soft coral growth. The pinnacle is roughly oval in shape, small enough to circumnavigate in a single dive but richly detailed enough to reward multiple visits. The eastern and northern faces are sculpted with a series of deep overhangs between 18 and 25 meters, and it is here that Kuda Rah Thila reveals its true splendor. The ceilings of these overhangs are blanketed in dendronephthya soft corals so dense and vibrant they resemble an underwater flower garden, with clouds of pink, purple, orange, and crimson polyps opening in the current to feed. Beneath these overhangs, the protected alcoves harbor an extraordinary concentration of life. Giant moray eels extend from crevices, their jaws rhythmically opening and closing. Lionfish hover upside down against the coral ceilings, while glassfish swirl in shimmering silver clouds that part and reform around passing divers. Scorpionfish lie perfectly camouflaged on coral ledges, and careful observers will find a remarkable diversity of nudibranchs on the overhang walls. The open water around the thila brings a different cast of characters. Large schools of blue-striped snapper orbit the pinnacle in dense golden formations, while bannerfish and pyramid butterflyfish create elegant white-and-yellow processions along the reef edge. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy patches at the base, and hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reef top, where healthy hard coral coverage provides both food and shelter. Kuda Rah Thila is best dived during incoming currents, which bring clear oceanic water and encourage the soft corals to open fully. The protected status means dive groups are managed carefully, preserving the pristine condition that makes this site a benchmark for thila diving worldwide.
