King Cruiser Wreck

Phuket · Phuket · Thailand

The King Cruiser Wreck is the most famous wreck dive in the Andaman Sea and one of Thailand's most-visited underwater attractions. This 85-meter passenger ferry sank on May 4, 1997, after striking Anemone Reef while en route from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi. All passengers and crew were safely rescued, and the vessel settled upright on the sandy seabed at 32 meters, creating an instant artificial reef that has been drawing divers ever since. The wreck sits in an impressively complete state, its hull rising from the sand with the main vehicle deck at 18 to 20 meters and the wheelhouse at approximately 14 meters. Although the superstructure has deteriorated over nearly three decades underwater, the overall shape of the ferry remains clearly recognizable, and the scale of the wreck is genuinely impressive when viewed from the surrounding blue water. Marine colonization of the King Cruiser has been spectacular. Every surface is encrusted with soft corals, sponges, and oysters that provide food and shelter for an astonishing density of marine life. Lionfish are everywhere, sometimes numbering in the dozens, hovering beneath overhangs and in doorways with their venomous fins displayed. Scorpionfish lie camouflaged on the railings, and massive groupers lurk in the darker interior sections. The open water around the wreck is equally active. Enormous schools of yellowtail barracuda form shimmering tornado-like formations above the superstructure, one of the most photographed spectacles on the wreck. Schools of batfish drift gracefully around the mast, snapper and trevally patrol the mid-water, and stingrays rest on the sandy bottom alongside the hull. On good days, the variety and density of fish life on and around the King Cruiser is extraordinary. Visibility varies considerably, from 5 meters on poor days to 20 meters or more during the high season from November through April. Currents are usually moderate but can surprise divers, particularly at the bow and stern where they accelerate around the hull. The wreck's location between Shark Point and Anemone Reef makes it a natural centerpiece of Phuket's most popular three-dive day trip, combining wreck, pinnacle, and reef diving in a single excursion.

FAQ

What is the history of the King Cruiser?

The King Cruiser was an 85-meter passenger ferry that operated between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi. On May 4, 1997, the vessel struck Anemone Reef and sank within approximately two hours. All passengers and crew were rescued safely. The wreck settled upright on the sandy bottom at 32 meters and has since become one of Thailand's most popular wreck dives.

Can I penetrate the King Cruiser Wreck?

Limited penetration of the upper decks is possible for certified wreck divers, but the structure has deteriorated significantly since sinking in 1997. Several sections of the superstructure have collapsed, and many areas are unstable. Most dive operators allow exploration of the open deck areas and wheelhouse but restrict deeper penetration. Always follow your guide and carry appropriate lights.

What certification do I need to dive the King Cruiser?

Advanced Open Water certification is recommended as the main deck sits at 18 to 20 meters and the bottom is at 32 meters. Open Water divers with good buoyancy skills can enjoy the upper sections of the wreck. Wreck specialty certification is recommended for anyone wanting to explore interior areas. Nitrox certification is beneficial for extending bottom time at depth.
