Kenting - Sail Rock
Hengchun · Pingtung County · Taiwan
Sail Rock is one of the most recognisable dive sites in southern Taiwan, located within Kenting National Park at the southernmost point of the island. The site takes its name from a dramatic triangular rock formation that protrudes from the sea like a ship's sail, creating a striking landmark both above and below the waterline. Kenting sits at the confluence of the Taiwan Strait, the Pacific Ocean, and the South China Sea, where warm currents sustain year-round coral growth and a rich diversity of marine life. The dive begins with a straightforward shore entry about 100 metres from the parking area. A gentle coral slope leads divers through gardens of hard and soft corals that support a bustling community of tropical reef fish. Clownfish defend their anemone homes, butterflyfish flit between coral heads, and parrotfish crunch audibly on the reef. The rocky substrate around the base of Sail Rock itself creates overhangs and crevices that shelter moray eels, lionfish, and the occasional stingray resting on sandy patches. Sea turtles are increasingly common visitors, and reef sharks patrol the deeper edges of the site. The maximum depth around Sail Rock reaches approximately 25 metres on the offshore side, while the protected shallows near the rock formation provide excellent conditions for newly certified divers at just 5 to 10 metres. The site sits within Kenting National Park, which provides a degree of marine protection that has helped maintain healthy coral coverage despite the area's popularity with tourists. Visibility ranges from 10 to 25 metres depending on season and conditions, with the clearest water typically occurring during the dry autumn months. Kenting is Taiwan's most accessible dive destination, located approximately 90 minutes by car from Kaohsiung, the country's second-largest city. The area offers abundant accommodation, restaurants, and a lively beach-town atmosphere. Numerous dive centres cater to beginners and experienced divers alike, offering shore dives, boat dives, and certification courses. The proximity to other excellent sites like Houbihu harbour and the nuclear power plant outlet makes Kenting ideal for multi-day diving holidays.

FAQ
Is Sail Rock suitable for beginner divers?
Yes, Sail Rock is rated as a beginner-friendly dive site with shore entry and relatively mild currents at most times. The reef starts shallow and slopes gradually, allowing new divers to stay within comfortable depth ranges. However, divers should be aware of occasional jet ski activity near the surface, making it important to wear a buoyancy compensator and deploy a surface marker buoy during ascent. Dive operators provide thorough briefings on local boat traffic.
When is the best visibility at Kenting?
The clearest water at Kenting typically occurs during the dry season from late autumn through early spring, roughly October to March, when reduced rainfall means less runoff clouding the water. However, this can vary year to year. Summer months bring warmer water and more marine life activity, including plankton blooms that reduce visibility but attract larger creatures like whale sharks and manta rays to the area.
What other dive sites can I combine with Sail Rock at Kenting?
Kenting offers numerous dive sites within easy reach of Sail Rock. Houbihu, the nuclear power plant outlet, and the Pillar Reef are all popular alternatives. Houbihu is famous for its harbour diving where sea turtles frequently rest, while the power plant warm water outlet attracts unusual species not found elsewhere. Most dive shops in the Kenting area can arrange multi-site day trips covering two to three locations along the peninsula.
