Kandooma Thila

Kandooma · South Male Atoll · Maldives

Kandooma Thila is one of the premier dive sites in the Maldives' South Male Atoll, a teardrop-shaped underwater pinnacle that rises from the sandy channel floor at 40 meters to within 12 meters of the surface. Located just north of Kandooma Island on the outer edge of the atoll, this protected marine area delivers some of the most reliable shark encounters in the central Maldives. The thila's topography is what makes it exceptional. The north and east faces are sculpted with dramatic overhangs and swim-throughs, their ceilings encrusted with vibrant dendronephthya soft corals in shades of pink, orange, and purple. These sheltered alcoves harbor giant moray eels, lionfish, and clusters of Oriental sweetlips that hover motionless in the current shadows. The western side slopes more gently, offering a chance to survey the broader reef structure where Napoleon wrasse and hawksbill turtles are frequently spotted. The real draw at Kandooma Thila is the pelagic action. Strong currents funnel through the channel, carrying nutrients that sustain an impressive food chain. Grey reef sharks are the signature species, often appearing in groups of ten or more along the current-exposed edges. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy ledges between the overhangs, while spotted eagle rays glide past in elegant formations. Schools of bluefin trevally hunt in coordinated packs, and yellowback fusiliers swirl in dense clouds that sometimes obscure the reef behind them. Diving Kandooma Thila demands respect. Most dives begin with a negative entry directly onto the thila's top, followed by a descent along the current-swept face where sharks congregate. Divers typically shelter behind coral bommies to watch the action, then drift along the reef as the current permits. The northeast monsoon season from January through April offers peak visibility of 25 to 30 meters and slightly more manageable currents, though the site rewards experienced divers year-round with its extraordinary concentration of marine life.

FAQ

What skill level is needed to dive Kandooma Thila?

Advanced certification is strongly recommended. The thila sits in a channel where currents can be powerful and unpredictable. Divers must be comfortable with negative entries, strong drift conditions, and maintaining position behind reef structures to observe sharks safely. The top of the reef is at 12 meters, so there is no shallow shelter.

When is the best time to dive Kandooma Thila?

The northeast monsoon season from January to April generally offers the best conditions with better visibility often exceeding 25 meters. During this period, incoming currents bring nutrient-rich water that attracts sharks and pelagic fish. The site is diveable year-round, but the southwest monsoon from May to November can bring stronger currents and reduced visibility.

What marine life can I expect at Kandooma Thila?

Grey reef sharks are the headline species, often seen in groups of ten or more patrolling the channel side. Whitetip reef sharks rest on ledges, eagle rays cruise past the overhangs, and large Napoleon wrasse are regular visitors. Schools of bluefin trevally, Oriental sweetlips, and fusiliers provide a constant backdrop of activity around the pinnacle.
