Japanese Garden

Koh Tao · Surat Thani Province · Thailand

Japanese Garden is Koh Tao's most beloved shallow reef dive, a sheltered bay on the eastern side of iconic Koh Nang Yuan island that has introduced countless divers to the underwater world. Sitting directly opposite the Twins dive site, separated only by Koh Nang Yuan's famous white sandbar, this calm, crystal-clear bay offers what many regard as the widest variety and diversity of corals anywhere around Koh Tao in a single dive site. The reef stretches across the entire bay from paddling depth to approximately 14 to 15 meters, with virtually no current to challenge even the most nervous first-time diver. The topography is a gentle slope of coral gardens interspersed with sandy patches, creating a natural aquarium effect that is perfect for relaxed exploration. Mushroom corals, branching staghorn formations, massive brain corals, and giant barrel sponges create structural complexity at every depth, while giant clams wedge themselves into the reef architecture. For a shallow site, Japanese Garden punches well above its weight in marine life. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on the sand between coral heads, occasionally joined by a passing eagle ray. Clouds of butterflyfish, angelfish, and long-fin bannerfish animate the mid-water, while red-breasted wrasse and parrotfish graze on the coral surfaces. Anemonefish defend their territories with characteristic aggression, and the vigilant diver may spot a well-camouflaged scorpionfish or moray eel tucked into a crevice. Titan triggerfish patrol their nesting territories, particularly during breeding season when divers should maintain respectful distance. Water temperatures at Japanese Garden remain a warm 28 to 31 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Visibility is generally 10 to 20 meters, with the clearest conditions from March through September. The site is equally excellent for snorkeling, with healthy coral starting from just 1 to 2 meters depth. For divers taking their first breaths underwater, Japanese Garden provides the gentle, colorful, confidence-building environment that creates lifelong passion for the sport.

FAQ

Is Japanese Garden really suitable for complete beginners?

Yes, it is one of the most popular training sites in Thailand. The shallow depth of maximum 15 meters, calm protected water with virtually no current, and gentle sandy bottom make it ideal for discovery dives, Open Water training dives, and first-time diving experiences. Many dive schools on Koh Tao use this site for skills training.

Can I snorkel at Japanese Garden?

Absolutely. The shallow reef starts from just 1 to 2 meters and the calm water makes it one of the best snorkeling sites in the Koh Tao area. Note that there is a 250 baht per person fee to visit Koh Nang Yuan island, payable on arrival regardless of whether you are diving or snorkeling.

What is the relationship between Japanese Garden and Koh Nang Yuan?

Japanese Garden occupies the eastern bay of Koh Nang Yuan, the iconic three-peaked island connected by a white sandbar northwest of Koh Tao. The dive site sits directly opposite the Twins dive site, separated only by the sandbar. Both sites are typically accessed by dive boats from Koh Tao, a 10 to 15 minute ride.
