Japanese Garden

Aqaba · Aqaba Governorate · Jordan

The Japanese Garden is one of Aqaba's most beloved dive sites and a showcase for the health and beauty of the Gulf of Aqaba's coral reefs. Named for the ordered, aesthetic arrangement of its coral formations that evokes a carefully tended garden, this shallow reef is a gem for divers of all levels, from first-timers to seasoned underwater photographers. Located within Aqaba's marine park, the Japanese Garden is a shore dive that begins with a gentle wade into the shallows before descending a sandy slope to the reef proper. The coral landscape unfolds in a series of terraces and coral patches, with enormous table corals creating canopies over the sandy channels between them. Brain corals, fire corals, and delicate branching corals fill every space, and the overall health of the reef is a testament to the marine park's protection. The site is a macro photographer's dream. Seahorses, the Japanese Garden's most famous residents, cling to coral branches and gorgonians, their camouflaged bodies requiring a sharp eye to spot. Nudibranchs in a variety of species and colours creep across the coral surfaces. Pipefish thread through the branches, cleaner shrimps maintain busy stations, and blennies peer from tiny holes with comical expressions. Clownfish nestle in anemones, and moray eels extend their heads from crevices. Larger visitors add variety. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on the sandy patches, lionfish hover under overhangs, and schools of parrotfish, butterflyfish, and anthias move through the coral gardens in constant motion. At night, the reef transforms as hunting lionfish prowl the reef crest and octopuses emerge from their daytime hiding spots. With a maximum depth of only 15 metres and virtually no current, the Japanese Garden allows for long, relaxed dives focused entirely on observation and photography. The site is diveable year-round, with water temperatures between 20 and 28 degrees and visibility typically ranging from 15 to 25 metres. Its proximity to other Aqaba dive sites, including the Cedar Pride wreck, makes it easy to pair with contrasting dives for a full day's diving.

FAQ

Why is it called the Japanese Garden?

The site earned its name from the meticulously arranged appearance of its coral formations, which resemble the carefully designed aesthetic of a traditional Japanese garden. Dense clusters of table corals, brain corals, and branching corals create distinct zones and pathways, giving the underwater landscape an ordered, garden-like beauty that distinguishes it from wilder reef formations.

Is Japanese Garden suitable for beginners?

Japanese Garden is one of the best beginner dive sites in the Red Sea. The maximum depth is only 15 metres, currents are minimal, and shore entry is straightforward. The site is within Aqaba's marine park, and many dive operators use it for training dives and Discover Scuba programmes. Despite its accessibility, the coral quality and marine life diversity make it rewarding for experienced divers and photographers too.

What macro life can I find at the Japanese Garden?

The Japanese Garden is a macro photographer's paradise. Resident seahorses are the headline act, often found clinging to coral branches or gorgonians. Nudibranchs of several species crawl across the reef, pipefish hide in the coral, and cleaner shrimps set up stations on coral heads. Clownfish in their anemone homes, moray eels, and tiny blennies peering from holes round out an exceptional macro experience.
