Hole in the Wall
West End · Bay Islands · Honduras
Hole in the Wall is one of Roatan's most exhilarating dives, delivering a unique vertical descent through a natural chimney in the reef wall that few sites anywhere can rival for pure drama. Located on the western end of Roatan near the dive hub of West End, this site begins innocently enough on a sandy reef shelf at around 10 metres, where a gaping hole in the coral floor marks the entrance to something extraordinary. Peering over the edge, you look straight down a vertical shaft lined with sponges and soft corals, daylight filtering up from the exit point in the wall face far below. The descent through the chimney is one of diving's great thrills -- a controlled drop through a coral-walled tube that feels simultaneously claustrophobic and liberating, the blue glow of the open water growing brighter as you approach the wall face. You emerge from the chimney at around 25 metres, and the effect is like stepping through a doorway from a room into the sky: the wall stretches away in both directions, dropping thousands of feet into the deep trench below. From the chimney exit, most divers drift along the wall face, gradually ascending while taking in the spectacular coral coverage. Massive barrel sponges, some large enough to sit inside, anchor the wall at intervals, while gorgonian sea fans the size of dining tables spread their branches to catch the mild current. Caribbean reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, spotted eagle rays glide along the wall edge, and Nassau grouper hover motionless under overhangs. The chimney itself is wide enough for a single diver to descend comfortably, but the vertical nature of the passage and the immediate transition to deep wall diving make this a site for experienced divers. Advanced Open Water certification is the minimum, and strong buoyancy control is essential both to avoid contact with the chimney walls and to manage the multi-level profile that the dive demands. Water temperature is a warm 27-30 degrees Celsius year-round, and visibility typically ranges from 20 to 30 metres. Morning dives offer the most dramatic light inside the chimney, with sunbeams piercing the opening from above.
