Hamda
Marsa Alam · Fury Shoal · Egypt
Hamda is a dive site that redefines what shallow diving can be. Nestled within the Fury Shoal reef system in Egypt's southern Red Sea, this extraordinary formation is a natural labyrinth of coral channels, sandy passages, and sheltered lagoons. With depths rarely exceeding 12 meters in the most engaging sections, it proves that some of the most magical diving in the Red Sea happens in the sun-drenched shallows. I entered the water expecting a pleasant but unremarkable shallow dive and surfaced an hour later utterly enchanted. The reef is structured as interconnected coral ridges and channels, forming a maze-like pattern. Underwater, these channels are between 2 and 6 meters wide with walls rising 3 to 8 meters from sandy floors. The sand is fine and white, reflecting turquoise light upward that bathes the coral walls in an ethereal glow. Swimming through these passages delivers the same exploratory thrill that cave diving offers but in a completely safe, sunlit environment. The coral coverage is exceptional. The walls are encrusted with massive Porites formations, table corals extending from ledges, and healthy fire coral colonies. In narrower passages, soft corals and small gorgonians add splashes of red and purple. The sheltered channels allow delicate branching formations to thrive in sizes rarely seen on more exposed reefs. Marine life is abundant and remarkably confiding. Green turtles rest in coral alcoves with complete indifference to passing divers. Octopuses display their color-changing abilities against the pale sand. Schools of parrotfish crunch through the channels, anthias swarm above every coral head, and moray eels peer from holes in the channel walls. Bluespotted ribbontail rays scatter as you round blind corners. Hamda's greatest gift is time. The shallow depths mean bottom times of seventy minutes or more are easily achievable, allowing a contemplative pace that deeper dives rarely permit.

FAQ
What makes Hamda different from other Fury Shoal sites?
Hamda is distinctive for its labyrinthine reef structure. Unlike typical Red Sea sites that feature walls or slopes, Hamda consists of a complex network of coral channels, canyons, and passages that wind through the reef formation. The channels are shallow, typically between 3 and 12 meters, with sandy floors that reflect turquoise light upward onto the coral walls. It feels like swimming through a natural underwater maze, with each turn revealing new scenes and marine life.
Is Hamda good for snorkeling?
Hamda is one of the best snorkeling sites in the southern Red Sea. The reef top is at 1 to 2 meters in places, and the shallow channels are easily visible from the surface. The crystal-clear water and brilliant white sand create exceptional visibility for snorkelers. Many liveaboard operators include dedicated snorkeling time at Hamda because the shallow reef architecture is equally impressive from above as it is at depth.
What is the maximum depth at Hamda?
The maximum depth at Hamda is approximately 18 meters on the outer reef slopes, but the most interesting diving occurs between 3 and 12 meters within the coral channels and lagoon areas. This shallow profile makes Hamda ideal for extended bottom times, multiple dives per day, and divers who want to maximize their time underwater without worrying about no-decompression limits.
