Half Moon Caye Wall

Belize City · Lighthouse Reef Atoll · Belize

Half Moon Caye Wall is often described as the dive that steals the show on a Lighthouse Reef day trip, even when paired with the legendary Great Blue Hole. This vertical wall off the southeastern corner of Half Moon Caye drops from a shallow reef flat at around 10 metres into blue-water depths exceeding 1,000 metres, and every centimetre of its face is covered in some of the healthiest coral growth you will find anywhere in the Caribbean. The wall is a tapestry of colour and texture. Massive purple barrel sponges jut out from the face like oversized wine barrels, tangled rope sponges hang in curtains of yellow and orange, and enormous gorgonian sea fans spread their nets to catch the gentle current. Black coral trees -- rare and protected -- grow in the deeper recesses, their delicate branches swaying in the water column. Natural swim-throughs and tunnels punctuate the wall, inviting exploration and creating photographic opportunities that are hard to match. Marine life at Half Moon Caye Wall benefits from the site's remote location and protected status within the Lighthouse Reef natural monument. Spotted eagle rays cruise along the wall edge with elegant wing beats, nurse sharks rest under the overhangs, and hawksbill turtles navigate the coral face with slow deliberation. Nassau grouper, protected throughout Belize, grow to impressive sizes here, and the shallow reef top is busy with queen triggerfish, midnight parrotfish, and dense schools of blue chromis. Visibility routinely exceeds 30 metres, and the water clarity is often described as the best in all of Belize. The current is generally mild, making this a comfortable wall dive for intermediate-level divers, though buoyancy control is important to avoid contact with the delicate coral. After the dive, Half Moon Caye itself offers a rare bonus: the island is a protected bird sanctuary where red-footed boobies and frigatebirds nest in the littoral forest. Walking the nature trail between dives is a highlight that no other Caribbean dive destination can match. Plan this as a full-day trip from Belize City or the cayes -- the journey is long but the reward is absolute.

FAQ

Is Half Moon Caye Wall better than the Great Blue Hole?

Many experienced divers consider Half Moon Caye Wall the superior dive. While the Great Blue Hole is a unique geological experience, Half Moon Caye Wall offers far more marine life, healthier coral coverage, and longer bottom times. Most operators pair the two sites on a single day trip, giving you the best of both worlds.

What makes Half Moon Caye Wall special for diving in Belize?

The wall begins at just 10 metres and drops vertically into the deep blue. Pristine coral coverage includes massive barrel sponges, black coral trees, and enormous sea fans. Natural swim-throughs in the wall add adventure, and the remote location at Lighthouse Reef means the reef is exceptionally healthy and uncrowded.

What can you see at Half Moon Caye besides diving?

Half Moon Caye is a protected natural monument and bird sanctuary. The island hosts a breeding colony of red-footed boobies and magnificent frigatebirds. After diving, you can walk the nature trail through the bird sanctuary and visit the observation platform -- a unique above-and-below-water experience.
