Haad Yao Reef

Koh Phangan · Surat Thani Province · Thailand

Haad Yao Reef fringes the western coastline of Koh Phangan, extending from the white sand beach over a gentle slope of boulder coral and staghorn formations to a sandy reef edge at around 18 metres. The site lacks the drama of deeper pinnacles found elsewhere in the Gulf of Thailand, but it delivers a consistently reliable, marine-rich dive in warm, calm water that rewards patience and attention to detail. It is the kind of site where experienced divers rediscover the pleasure of simply watching reef life go about its business. I entered from the boat over the reef flat in three metres, the bottom a mosaic of brain coral, fire coral, and Porites boulders the size of small cars. Clownfish defended anemone patches with comical ferocity, charging my camera housing whenever the lens drifted too close. Christmas tree worms in vivid spirals of red, blue, and yellow erupted from coral heads, snapping shut at the slightest shadow. As the reef sloped deeper, the coral architecture became more complex. Plate corals extended in tiers, their undersides home to schooling cardinalfish that retreated further under cover as I approached. Porcupinefish hovered in mid-water, large eyes blinking slowly. A pair of blue-spotted stingrays lay on the sand between coral heads, their electric-blue spots vivid against the pale substrate. At the reef edge, where coral met open sand at 18 metres, a blacktip reef shark cruised along the boundary with the unhurried confidence of a regular patrol. It was joined by a second, then a third, all moving in the same direction with distinctive black-tipped dorsals cutting clean lines through the water. Above the reef, dense schools of fusiliers and bluestripe snappers formed shifting clouds that darkened and brightened as they turned. Parrotfish crunched on coral in the shallows, each bite audible from several metres away. The safety stop was spent among soft corals and sponges at 5 metres, where afternoon light turned the water golden and every fish seemed gilded.

FAQ

How do I get to Haad Yao Reef?

Haad Yao is a beach on the western coast of Koh Phangan. The island is reached by ferry from Koh Samui, which takes 30 minutes on the fast ferry, or from Surat Thani on the mainland. Once on Koh Phangan, Haad Yao is accessible by taxi or scooter from the main town of Thong Sala, about 20 minutes drive. Several dive shops on the beach offer daily boat trips to the reef, which lies just a few hundred metres offshore.

Is Haad Yao Reef suitable for complete beginners?

Haad Yao Reef is one of the best beginner dive sites on Koh Phangan. The maximum depth is only 18 metres along the reef edge, with most of the interesting coral life between 3 and 12 metres. Currents are almost always mild, and the sheltered western coast is protected from the northeast monsoon. Several dive shops offer Discover Scuba Diving introductory experiences and Open Water courses using this reef as a training site.

What photography opportunities are available?

Haad Yao Reef is excellent for both wide-angle and macro photography. The shallow depth means abundant natural light, reducing the need for powerful strobes. Blacktip reef sharks on the deeper reef edge provide wide-angle subjects, while the coral gardens host Christmas tree worms, nudibranchs, and colourful clownfish in anemones for macro work. Blue-spotted stingrays on the sandy patches between coral heads make reliable subjects as they tend to hold still rather than flee.
