Gorgona Island
Guapi · Colombian Pacific · Colombia
Gorgona Island is a 26-square-kilometre emerald jewel in Colombia's Pacific Ocean, approximately 50 kilometres off the coast of Cauca Department. Once a feared maximum-security prison from 1960 to 1984, the island was reclaimed by nature after the prison closed and was declared a National Natural Park in 1985. Decades of protection have transformed its surrounding waters into one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Colombia's coast. The park authority has designated twelve dive sites around the island, with depths ranging from 12 to 33 metres. El Remanso and La Tiburonera are among the most popular, offering encounters with whitetip reef sharks that rest on sandy patches between coral heads. The reefs themselves are a mosaic of hard and soft corals, massive barrel sponges, and sea fans that sway in the gentle Pacific currents. Large schools of snappers and jacks swirl over the reef crests, while giant groupers lurk in caves and overhangs. The island's Pacific location places it directly in the migration path of humpback whales, which travel from Antarctic feeding grounds to breed in these warm tropical waters between June and October. During this season, the underwater soundtrack is filled with haunting whale song, and surface intervals between dives frequently include whale sightings. Sea turtles, both green and hawksbill, are year-round residents and are commonly seen on virtually every dive. Diving conditions vary with the season. Visibility ranges from 10 to 20 metres, with the best clarity during the dry months from May to October. Water temperatures swing from 20 degrees Celsius during cold-water upwelling events to 28 degrees in the warmest months. Currents are generally moderate but can strengthen around headlands and exposed sites. The remote location, limited infrastructure, and strict park regulations mean that Gorgona never feels crowded, offering an authentic wilderness diving experience that few places in the Americas can match.

FAQ
What is the history of Gorgona Island?
Gorgona Island served as a high-security prison from 1960 to 1984, earning it the nickname Colombia's Alcatraz. The prison was closed and the island was declared a National Natural Park in 1985. Decades without fishing or development have allowed the reefs and marine life to recover spectacularly, making it one of Colombia's best-preserved marine ecosystems.
When is the best time to dive at Gorgona Island?
The best diving conditions run from May to October, when visibility improves and water temperatures are warmest. This period also coincides with humpback whale season from June to October, when mothers and calves from Antarctica migrate to these warm waters to breed. The park sometimes closes during the wettest months, so check access before planning a trip.
How do you reach Gorgona Island for diving?
Gorgona Island sits about 50 kilometres off the Pacific coast of Colombia, accessed by boat from the town of Guapi in Cauca Department. The boat journey takes two to three hours. Accommodation is available on the island through the national park system, but facilities are basic. Some operators also run liveaboard trips combining Gorgona with Malpelo Island.
