Fuvahmulah Tiger Shark Point

Fuvahmulah · Gnaviyani Atoll · Maldives

Tiger Shark Point off Fuvahmulah Island has established itself as the Maldives' premier shark diving destination, offering what many consider the world's most reliable tiger shark encounters. Located off the harbour wall on the island's northern side, this site sits where the island's steep underwater slope meets the open Indian Ocean, creating conditions that attract large pelagic species year-round. The dive begins with a descent along the harbour wall to a rubble and sand plateau at approximately 20 metres where divers position themselves. Tiger sharks approach from the blue, often within minutes of descent, drawn to the cleaning station established by smaller reef fish. On a typical dive, two to five tiger sharks cruise slowly past at close range, their distinctive striped flanks and broad heads unmistakable. These are large animals, commonly three to four metres in length, and they display remarkable comfort around divers. Beyond the headline tiger sharks, Fuvahmulah's isolated oceanic position generates remarkable pelagic diversity. Scalloped hammerhead sharks school in the deeper water below 30 metres and are frequently spotted during ascent. Thresher sharks with their extraordinary elongated tails occasionally make appearances in the early morning. Oceanic manta rays pass through seasonally, and whale sharks are possible from November to March. Silvertip sharks and grey reef sharks are permanent residents that provide constant action between the main events. The site demands respect and experience. Currents can be powerful and unpredictable, requiring negative entries and comfort in blue water conditions with no reef reference. Visibility ranges from 15 metres on plankton-rich days to over 40 metres when conditions are clear. All diving is conducted under the supervision of experienced local guides who understand the sharks' behaviour patterns and position divers accordingly. This is not a casual dive but rather one of the planet's great wildlife encounters.

FAQ

Is it safe to dive with tiger sharks at Fuvahmulah?

Diving with tiger sharks at Fuvahmulah is conducted by experienced local operators who follow strict safety protocols developed over years of daily tiger shark encounters. Divers remain on the reef or at designated depth levels while the sharks swim in the water column nearby. There is no feeding or baiting involved. The sharks at this site are habituated to diver presence and display calm, predictable behaviour. However, tiger sharks are large apex predators and all participants must follow guide instructions precisely. Only certified advanced divers with significant open water experience are accepted, and most operators require a minimum of 100 logged dives.

How do I reach Fuvahmulah for diving?

Fuvahmulah is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the Maldives, located in the far south. It is reached by domestic flight from Male's Velana International Airport, with the flight taking approximately 70 minutes. Several daily flights operate on the route. Dive operators on Fuvahmulah offer accommodation packages including airport transfers, diving, and meals. Unlike resort-based diving in the Maldives, Fuvahmulah operators are guesthouse-based. The island has a small harbour from which dive boats depart, with Tiger Shark Point located just minutes from shore.
