Fotteyo Kandu Channel Dive
Felidhoo · Vaavu Atoll · Maldives
Fotteyo Kandu cuts through the eastern rim of Vaavu Atoll, a deep channel connecting the Indian Ocean with the atoll's lagoon. Among Maldivian channel dives, Fotteyo has earned its reputation as the standout, where pelagic action, coral decoration, and dramatic architecture converge. Our liveaboard positioned on the ocean side, and the divemaster briefed us on incoming current: strong but consistent, ideal for a hook-in dive at the channel edge. We entered with negative buoyancy and dropped to 25 metres, finding the reef corner where the channel wall meets the outer slope. The overhangs struck me first. The walls are deeply undercut at 20 to 30 metres, creating cave-like recesses extending back several metres. Every centimetre of ceiling is covered in soft corals — dense Dendronephthya clusters in yellow, orange, red, and electric purple, polyps fully extended in nutrient-laden current. The colour saturation under torch light was extraordinary. Clipping my reef hook into rock at the channel edge, I turned to face the blue. Grey reef sharks cruised the channel mouth in loose formation, twenty-five visible at any moment, their sleek bodies angling into the current with barely perceptible fin movements. They swept past at 15 to 20 metres, close enough to see individual denticles on their skin. Behind the sharks came the schools. Fusiliers in the thousands poured through in a silver river, parting around our group. Giant trevally charged through in explosive strikes, scattering fish before the school reformed. Barracuda held formation higher in the water column. A massive Napoleon wrasse appeared from below, its blue-green bulk moving with ponderous grace. Three eagle rays glided past in formation. The entire dive felt like front-row seating at an ocean theatre where the performance never paused. Unhooking after 45 minutes, I drifted into the channel, ascending past more soft coral gardens. The contrast between the electric drama of the edge and the pastoral beauty of the inner reef was Fotteyo's final gift.

FAQ
What makes Fotteyo Kandu one of the best channel dives in the Maldives?
Fotteyo Kandu combines several features that many other Maldivian channels lack: consistent shark numbers, exceptional soft coral growth, dramatic overhang structures, and a channel shape that concentrates pelagic life. The channel walls feature deep undercuts decorated with soft corals in colours rarely seen elsewhere in the Maldives, creating photographic opportunities that are widely considered among the country's best. The incoming current reliably brings large schools of fish and multiple shark species, and the channel's orientation means that diving conditions are good during both monsoon seasons.
What diving experience is needed for Fotteyo Kandu?
Fotteyo Kandu requires advanced diving skills and significant experience with current diving. The incoming tidal current can be very strong, and divers typically use reef hooks to maintain position at the channel edge while watching the pelagic show. Negative entries are standard, as surface current can prevent comfortable descent at the planned entry point. Down-currents are possible near the channel walls, and divers must be comfortable managing buoyancy in turbulent water. Most liveaboard operators require a minimum of 50 logged dives and Advanced Open Water certification, though 100-plus dives with current experience is more realistic.
How do I dive Fotteyo Kandu?
Fotteyo Kandu is most commonly dived from liveaboard vessels operating in the central Maldives atolls. Vaavu Atoll is included in many standard liveaboard itineraries running from Male southward through Ari and Vaavu atolls. Day trips from resort islands in Vaavu Atoll are also possible but less common due to the atoll's limited resort development. Liveaboard trips typically spend one to two days diving the channels of Vaavu Atoll, with Fotteyo as the centrepiece. The dive is conducted on incoming current when possible, as this pushes nutrient-rich water and marine life into the channel.
