E6 Cathedral

Rakiraki · Bligh Water · Fiji

E6 Cathedral is one of Fiji's most legendary dive sites, a towering underwater pinnacle rising from the depths of the nutrient-rich Bligh Water passage that separates Fiji's two main islands. Named after its position on old nautical charts, E6 has earned a mythical reputation among experienced divers for the intensity of its marine life, the drama of its topography, and the rainbow of soft corals coating every surface. The pinnacle rises from a sandy bottom at over 40 meters to within 3 meters of the surface, its walls steep and current-swept. The dive begins with a negative entry, dropping quickly down the mooring line to the summit. From here the wall falls away on all sides, and the scale becomes apparent — a massive undersea mountain attracting life from surrounding deep water. The cathedral chamber is the site's defining feature, located on the western face at around 20 meters. It is a large swim-through cavern with two openings that allow current to flow through and light to enter from both sides. The chamber walls and ceiling are carpeted with soft corals in every shade of red, orange, pink, yellow, and purple, creating a kaleidoscopic display frequently cited as Fiji's most beautiful underwater scene. Swimming slowly through the chamber, shafts of light illuminate the soft corals from behind, creating an effect that genuinely resembles stained glass in a gothic cathedral. Outside the chamber, grey reef sharks patrol the pinnacle walls, their numbers sometimes reaching double digits on days with strong current. White-tip reef sharks rest on ledges, and giant trevally make explosive hunting passes through schools of anthias and fusiliers clouding the upper pinnacle. Barracuda form spinning vortexes in the current, and occasional manta rays cruise through during cooler months. The current that makes E6 challenging is what makes it extraordinary — delivering nutrients that feed the soft coral growth and attracting the pelagic species that make every dive an event.

FAQ

How do I access E6 Cathedral in Bligh Water?

E6 is located in the remote Bligh Water passage between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, accessible primarily by liveaboard vessels operating multi-day itineraries through this area. Some land-based operators in Rakiraki run day trips to the nearest Bligh Water pinnacles, but E6 specifically is most reliably reached by liveaboard. The journey from Rakiraki takes about 90 minutes by fast boat.

Why is it called E6?

The name E6 comes from its position on old nautical charts, designated by grid reference E6. The 'Cathedral' suffix was added by divers to describe the site's signature feature — a massive chamber within the pinnacle that resembles a Gothic cathedral, with arched openings and walls draped in colorful soft corals that catch the light like stained glass windows.

What skill level is needed for E6 Cathedral?

Advanced Open Water certification is the minimum, and experience with strong currents is essential. The pinnacle rises from 40 meters and currents can be powerful. The cathedral chamber itself is at around 18-25 meters, well within advanced recreational limits. Most liveaboard operators will assess divers' experience before including E6 on the itinerary.
