Dibba Rock
Dibba Al-Fujairah · Fujairah · United Arab Emirates
Dibba Rock is widely regarded as the finest dive site in the United Arab Emirates, and its status as the country's oldest marine protected area has allowed a remarkably rich ecosystem to develop around this small rocky island just offshore from Dibba Al-Fujairah. A mere 5-minute boat ride from the dive centres, the rock rises from a sandy seabed at around 14 to 16 metres and breaks the surface, its underwater slopes forming a compact but incredibly productive reef. The site's no-fishing zone designation, in place for over 15 years, has created a sanctuary where marine life thrives in unusual abundance for the region. Green and hawksbill turtles are the stars of the show, present on virtually every dive, often resting on the reef or grazing on coral and sponges. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the deeper perimeter, their sleek forms cruising just beyond the reef's edge. Cuttlefish, masters of colour change, are frequently encountered, particularly during the breeding season. The macro life at Dibba Rock rivals much more famous destinations. Seahorses cling to coral branches, nudibranchs of several species add splashes of vivid colour to the reef surface, and moray eels of multiple species peer from every crevice. Clownfish in their anemone homes, lionfish hovering under overhangs, and clouds of fusiliers add to a dive that constantly rewards attention to detail. The reef structure itself is a mix of coral-encrusted boulders, small walls, and sandy patches. Hard coral cover has improved significantly since protection began, and soft corals add colour to the deeper sections. The shallow side nearest the shore, at only 3 to 4 metres, provides a gentle start or finish to the dive and is popular with snorkellers. Visibility at Dibba Rock is variable, typically ranging from 5 to 15 metres. Winter months generally offer the clearest water, while summer plankton blooms can reduce visibility but attract filter-feeding manta and whale sharks to the broader coast. Water temperatures range from 22 degrees in winter to 32 degrees in the peak of summer.

FAQ
What makes Dibba Rock the best dive site in the UAE?
Dibba Rock benefits from over 15 years as a no-fishing zone, making it the UAE's oldest marine protected area. This protection has allowed marine life to flourish. Turtles are present on nearly every dive, blacktip reef sharks patrol the reef, and the macro life -- including seahorses, nudibranchs, and cuttlefish -- is exceptional for the region. The site's proximity to shore and shallow depth make it accessible to all divers.
Is Dibba Rock suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. The maximum depth is only 14 to 16 metres depending on tides, with the shore side as shallow as 3 to 4 metres. Currents are usually mild, and the boat ride from shore is only about 5 minutes. Many UAE dive operators use Dibba Rock for training and introductory dives. Despite its accessibility, the diversity of marine life makes it equally rewarding for experienced divers and photographers.
When is the best time to dive Dibba Rock?
October through May offers the best conditions, with cooler water temperatures and better visibility. Summer months from June to September can bring reduced visibility due to plankton blooms, though this also attracts whale sharks to the broader Fujairah coast. Water temperatures range from 22 degrees in winter to 32 degrees in summer.
