Daymaniyat Islands

Muscat · Muscat · Oman

The Daymaniyat Islands are Oman's premier marine nature reserve, a chain of nine uninhabited limestone islands scattered across the Sea of Oman approximately 70 kilometers west of Muscat. Designated as a protected area since 1996, the islands harbor some of the healthiest and most biodiverse coral reefs in the Arabian Sea region, offering diving that rivals better-known destinations in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. The reefs around the islands are in exceptional condition, with dense coverage of hard and soft corals sheltering a vibrant community of reef fish. Green and hawksbill sea turtles are common residents, and blacktip reef sharks patrol the reef edges. The real draw, however, comes during the post-monsoon season from October to December, when whale sharks gather in the nutrient-rich waters to feed on plankton blooms. These gentle giants, reaching lengths of 10 meters or more, can be encountered both while diving and snorkeling, creating unforgettable experiences for divers of all levels. The islands are closed to visitors from May through October to protect nesting sea turtles and seabird colonies, which means the diving season aligns perfectly with the best underwater conditions. During the open season, the water is calm, visibility is good (typically 10-20 meters), and water temperatures are comfortable. The shallow reef profiles and mild currents make most sites suitable for beginners, while the diversity and quality of marine life provide plenty to engage experienced divers. Several Muscat-based dive operators run regular trips, making the Daymaniyat Islands an easily accessible introduction to Oman's underrated diving.
