FAQ
How do I reach the Yasawa Islands for diving?
The Yasawa Islands are reached by fast catamaran from Denarau Marina near Nadi, a journey of 2-5 hours depending on which island. Small seaplanes also connect Nadi to several resort islands. There are no dive shops in the traditional sense — diving is arranged through resort dive centers. Planning ahead is essential as the islands are remote.
When is manta ray season at Yasawa Coral Gardens?
Manta rays visit the Yasawa chain primarily between May and October, when plankton-rich currents sweep through the channels between islands. They are not guaranteed on the Coral Gardens reef itself but frequently pass through the adjacent channel. Dedicated manta dives at nearby Manta Ray Island offer more reliable encounters during peak season.
Is this site suitable for snorkeling as well as diving?
Absolutely. With coral starting at just 2-3 meters in crystal-clear water, Coral Gardens Yasawa is one of Fiji's finest snorkeling sites. Many resort guests choose to snorkel rather than dive here, and the experience from the surface is genuinely spectacular. The shallow depth means light penetration is excellent, making corals appear even more vibrant from above.
How reliable are manta ray sightings at this site?
During peak season (June to September), manta rays are present on approximately 80% of dives. Individual mantas have been identified and catalogued, and some visit the cleaning stations daily. Outside the peak months, sightings drop significantly. May and October are transition months with moderate chances. The dry season's cooler, plankton-rich waters are the primary attractant.
Can I snorkel with the mantas or is diving required?
Both are possible and rewarding. The cleaning stations are at 8-12 meters, making them accessible to divers, but mantas also visit shallower areas of the channel where snorkelers can observe from the surface. Some resorts offer guided manta snorkel trips that are remarkably effective. Diving gives you the advantage of being at the mantas' level for extended periods.
