CJ's Drop Off
Utila Town · Bay Islands · Honduras
CJ's Drop Off on the north side of Utila is where the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef reveals its most dramatic edge, and where the possibility of encountering the world's largest fish adds an element of breathless anticipation to every dive. This wall site plunges from a coral-topped reef shelf at around 12 metres into the deep channel between Utila and the open Caribbean, and the nutrient-rich waters that flow through this gap attract an impressive diversity of marine life, from tiny nudibranchs on the wall to whale sharks in the blue. The wall itself is in excellent condition, draped in giant barrel sponges that cling to the vertical face like oversized mushrooms, their rims often hosting cleaning gobies and small blennies. Sea fans and whip corals extend from the wall at perpendicular angles, creating a three-dimensional garden effect, while hard coral coverage on the reef top remains healthy and diverse. The wall drops well beyond recreational limits, but the best action is concentrated between 15 and 30 metres. Utila's claim to fame is its whale sharks, and CJ's Drop Off sits along the migration corridor these gentle giants follow when passing through the Bay Islands. Peak sighting season falls in March-April and again in September-October, timed with plankton blooms that draw the sharks to surface waters. While a whale shark sighting during a wall dive at CJ's is never guaranteed, the knowledge that one might appear at any moment adds a layer of excitement that few other Caribbean wall dives can claim. Even without whale sharks, CJ's delivers a quality wall dive. Caribbean reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, spotted eagle rays sweep past in small groups, and hawksbill turtles are common along the wall face. Schooling horse-eye jacks create silver curtains at the reef edge, and queen angelfish provide bursts of electric blue and yellow against the coral backdrop. Utila offers something else no other Caribbean dive destination can match: price. Known as one of the cheapest places to learn to dive in the world, Utila's competitive dive shop market means that experienced divers can enjoy multiple daily dives at CJ's Drop Off and other world-class sites for remarkably little money. The island's laid-back backpacker culture and budget-friendly accommodation make it possible to spend weeks diving without breaking the bank.
