Chumphon Pinnacle
Koh Tao · Surat Thani Province · Thailand
Chumphon Pinnacle stands as Koh Tao's crown jewel, the deep dive site that defines the island's reputation in the global diving community. Located approximately 11 kilometers northwest of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, this massive granite formation rises from a sandy bottom at 40 meters to its shallowest point at 14 meters below the surface, creating a submerged mountain that attracts an extraordinary concentration of marine life. The pinnacle complex actually comprises several granite towers separated by sandy channels, each encrusted with anemone gardens that rank among the most spectacular in Thailand. At 14 to 20 meters, vast beds of pink and purple anemones blanket the rock surfaces, hosting multiple species of anemonefish and creating a colorful backdrop for wide-angle photography. The deeper slopes from 22 to 35 meters are where the big action unfolds. Huge schools of chevron barracuda form dense curtains that part to let divers through, while bigeye jacks spiral in tornado formations around the pinnacle peaks. King mackerel, giant barracuda, and schools of trevally cruise the perimeter. But Chumphon Pinnacle's ultimate draw is the possibility of encountering whale sharks. From March through May, and again from September to October, plankton blooms attract these magnificent filter feeders to the pinnacle's vicinity. Sightings are never guaranteed, but Chumphon offers one of the best probabilities in Thai waters for this life-defining encounter. Groupers of impressive size inhabit the deeper crevices, moray eels coil in their lairs, and the rocky surfaces support nudibranchs and other macro subjects that occupy photographers during safety stops. Visibility at Chumphon Pinnacle ranges from 10 to 20 meters, occasionally exceeding this during optimal conditions. Water temperatures hold between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius. Currents are variable, ranging from negligible to strong, which contributes to the site's advanced rating. This is not a dive for beginners; the minimum depth of 14 meters, potential for strong currents, and lack of nearby shallow reef demand solid experience and buoyancy skills. For qualified divers, however, Chumphon Pinnacle delivers some of the most thrilling underwater minutes available anywhere in Thailand.
