Canyons
Puerto Galera · Puerto Galera · Philippines
Canyons is the most famous dive site in Puerto Galera and one of the signature dives of the Verde Island Passage, the narrow strait between Mindoro and Luzon that a 2006 California Academy of Sciences study identified as the epicenter of marine shore-fish biodiversity on Earth. This thrilling drift dive sends divers through a series of narrow coral canyons carved into the reef, where the powerful tidal currents of the passage fuel an explosion of marine life. The dive begins with a descent to the reef top at around 12 to 15 meters, where the canyon system opens as a series of parallel coral ridges separated by sandy channels. The canyon walls rise 3 to 5 meters above the floor, their surfaces covered in dense soft coral growth that transforms the passage into a tunnel of color. Dendronephthya soft corals in pinks, purples, and oranges drape from the overhangs, while gorgonian fans and whip corals extend from the walls. The canyon floors are lined with leather corals and barrel sponges, creating a sense of swimming through an underwater garden corridor. The currents are what make Canyons both exhilarating and demanding. The Verde Island Passage funnels massive volumes of water between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea, creating tidal currents that can reach two knots or more. On an incoming tide, divers enter at the deep end and drift through the canyons with the current carrying them effortlessly. The sensation is of flying through the underwater landscape, with soft corals streaming in the flow and fish crowding into the current shadows of the canyon walls. The marine life in the canyons is dense and diverse. Whitetip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, while banded and olive sea snakes hunt through the coral rubble with purposeful intensity. Giant trevally cruise the canyon mouths where the current accelerates, and dense schools of snapper and sweetlips pack into protected areas behind coral heads. The canyon walls are hunting grounds for lionfish and scorpionfish, their ambush positions perfectly suited to the current-driven delivery of prey. Beyond the canyon system, the reef slopes into deeper water where the biodiversity of the Verde Island Passage becomes fully apparent. The variety of coral species, invertebrates, and fish on a single dive at Canyons can be overwhelming, a direct reflection of the passage's position at the global apex of marine diversity. Triggerfish, groupers, moray eels, and nudibranchs add to the species count, while the occasional eagle ray or turtle provides a larger-scale encounter. Canyons demands respect but rewards it generously. The dive is weather-dependent and current-dependent, sometimes accessible only on specific tide phases. When conditions align, it delivers one of the most exciting drift dives in the Philippines, a rush of current, color, and marine life that captures the essence of diving in the world's most biodiverse marine corridor.

FAQ
Why is Puerto Galera considered a world-class diving destination?
Puerto Galera sits on the Verde Island Passage, which a landmark 2006 study by scientists from the California Academy of Sciences identified as the center of the center of marine shore-fish biodiversity on the planet. More species of marine life per unit area have been recorded here than anywhere else. The passage's strong currents carry nutrients that support extraordinary reef diversity, and the variety of dive sites ranges from gentle coral gardens to advanced drift dives like Canyons.
What skill level is needed for Canyons?
Advanced certification and experience with current diving are strongly recommended. The Canyons site is exposed to the strong tidal currents of the Verde Island Passage, and conditions can change rapidly. Divers must be comfortable with negative entries, strong drift, and navigating through confined canyon spaces in current. On slack tide days the site can be calmer, but it is best approached as an advanced dive.
How do I get to Puerto Galera?
Puerto Galera is on the northern coast of Mindoro Island, reached by ferry from Batangas City, which is about 2 to 3 hours south of Manila by car. Ferries and bangkas run frequently and the crossing takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Puerto Galera has a well-developed diving infrastructure with dozens of dive shops, resorts, and a wide range of accommodation. It is one of the most accessible world-class dive destinations in the Philippines.
