Buck Island Reef
Christiansted · St. Croix · US Virgin Islands
Buck Island Reef National Monument is one of the crown jewels of the US Virgin Islands and a place where even people who have never put their face in the water can experience a coral reef in all its splendour. Located about 2.5 kilometres off the northeast coast of St. Croix, this tiny uninhabited island is encircled by a barrier reef system that has been protected as a national monument since 1961, giving its marine ecosystems decades of recovery that are clearly visible in the water. The site's signature feature is its underwater snorkel trail -- a marked path through shallow elkhorn coral gardens where interpretive plaques on the sea floor identify different coral species, fish, and reef ecology. Swimming along this trail feels like visiting an underwater museum, with towering elkhorn formations creating a maze of channels populated by blue tang, queen parrotfish, and spotfin butterflyfish in remarkable abundance. The trail is set in calm, shallow water of 2-4 metres, making it accessible to snorkelers of all ages and abilities. For scuba divers, the real prize lies on the deeper outer reef sections along the north and east sides of the island. Here the reef slope drops to around 18 metres, with healthy hard and soft coral coverage, fields of sea fans, and scattered coral heads that serve as cleaning stations. Hawksbill turtles frequent these waters, and barracuda patrol the reef edge while spiny lobster hide in the ledges. The clarity of the water -- typically 20-30 metres -- and the abundance of marine life make these dives rewarding despite the relatively modest depth. Buck Island is a protected area, so no anchoring is permitted and all boats use moorings. Nothing may be taken from the reef or the island, and this strict protection has paid dividends in reef health. The island itself offers a beautiful white-sand beach where boats anchor for lunch between dives, and hiking trails provide views across the reef from above. Visit during the dry season from December through April for the calmest conditions and best visibility. Buck Island perfectly demonstrates that conservation works -- and that a healthy reef is the best dive site of all.
