Blue Hole (Gozo)

Dwejra · Gozo · Malta

The Blue Hole on Gozo's Dwejra coast is Malta's most famous dive site and one of the Mediterranean's finest shore dives. This natural geological formation is a vertical limestone chimney approximately 10 meters in diameter, dropping from a shallow inland pool to about 15 meters where it connects to the open sea through a dramatic archway. The site sits beside the former location of the Azure Window, which collapsed in 2017 — the remains of this iconic limestone arch now form an underwater reef at 15–20 meters. Descending into the Blue Hole is a magical experience: the vertical shaft is illuminated by light filtering from above and through the seaward arch, creating vivid blue light effects that make the site a photographer's paradise. Exiting through the arch onto the exterior reef wall reveals a Mediterranean underwater landscape of clean limestone, populated by barracuda, amberjack, and groupers. Octopuses are common in the rocky crevices. The wall outside the Blue Hole drops to 40+ meters, with ledges and caves where moray eels and lobsters shelter. The collapsed Azure Window rubble has created new reef structure that is rapidly being colonised by marine life. The site is accessed from shore via a path and stone steps — entry into the inland pool is easy and sheltered. There is no current in the Blue Hole itself, though mild current may be encountered on the outer wall. Visibility is typically excellent at 25–40 meters. The Blue Hole can be combined with a dive on the Azure Window ruins for a comprehensive Dwejra experience.
