Blue Bay Marine Park
Mahebourg · Grand Port · Mauritius
Blue Bay Marine Park occupies 353 hectares of protected lagoon on the southeastern coast of Mauritius, near the historic town of Mahebourg. Established in 1997 as the island's first and most significant marine reserve, the park has become a showcase for what Mauritian reefs can achieve when given proper protection. Within its boundaries, 38 species of coral, 72 species of fish, and a remarkable diversity of marine invertebrates thrive in waters so clear that the entire reef is visible from the surface. The lagoon is shallow, ranging from one to six metres in depth, with coral formations rising close to the surface in many areas. This creates an underwater garden of extraordinary beauty: table corals spread their wide platforms across the sandy floor, fire corals add flashes of golden yellow, and delicate staghorn corals branch upward through the water column. The park's crown jewel is a giant brain coral estimated to be over 1,000 years old, measuring five metres in diameter, which has become one of the most photographed natural features in Mauritius. Despite the shallow depths, the marine life is abundant and varied. Butterflyfish in vibrant pairs, surgeonfish in grazing schools, clownfish nestled in sea anemones, and parrotfish crunching on coral are all part of the daily show. Pennant coralfish, rainbow wrasses, sergeant majors, and damselfish add layers of colour and movement. Hawksbill and green turtles are occasional visitors, gliding through the coral gardens with unhurried grace. Blue Bay is primarily a snorkelling and glass-bottom boat destination rather than a scuba diving site, though some operators offer introductory discover scuba experiences in the lagoon. Its real value lies in its accessibility and the quality of its reef. Located just 15 minutes from the international airport, it is often the first or last underwater experience visitors have in Mauritius, and it consistently leaves a lasting impression. For families, non-divers, and anyone who wants to witness a thriving coral ecosystem without strapping on a tank, Blue Bay Marine Park is an essential Mauritius experience.

FAQ
What makes Blue Bay Marine Park special?
Blue Bay Marine Park is Mauritius's most important marine reserve, established in 1997 and covering 353 hectares. It protects 38 species of coral, including a remarkable 1,000-year-old brain coral measuring 5 metres in diameter. The shallow lagoon with depths of 1-6 metres provides ideal conditions for snorkelling and observation, and the park's protected status has allowed coral and fish populations to thrive.
Can you scuba dive in Blue Bay Marine Park?
Blue Bay is primarily a snorkelling destination due to its shallow depths of 1-5 metres. However, some operators offer introductory discover scuba experiences in the lagoon. The shallow, clear water and abundance of coral and fish make it one of the best places in Mauritius for beginners to experience the underwater world. Glass-bottom boat tours are also available for non-swimmers.
How do you get to Blue Bay Marine Park?
Blue Bay Marine Park is located in the southeast of Mauritius, about 15 minutes by car from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport and close to the historic town of Mahebourg. Access to the water is from the Blue Bay public beach, and glass-bottom boats and snorkelling tours depart regularly from the shoreline. Entry to the marine park requires a small fee.
