Bloody Bay Wall Negril

Negril · Negril · Jamaica

Bloody Bay Wall in Negril is Jamaica's premier wall dive and one of the Caribbean's most underrated deep dives. Located off the western tip of the island, just a ten-minute boat ride from Seven Mile Beach, this wall starts at a reef crest around 12 metres and drops vertically into the abyss. The first time I peered over the edge and saw nothing but blue below, I understood why local divemasters speak about this site with reverence. The wall face is covered in an extraordinary display of sponges — barrel sponges large enough for a diver to curl up inside, tube sponges in brilliant lavender and yellow, and rope sponges trailing down the vertical surface like living curtains. Among the sponges, large sea fans and black coral bushes sway in the gentle current. The combination creates an underwater garden that photographs beautifully and rewards slow, attentive diving. Marine life encounters along the wall are consistently good. Spotted eagle rays glide along the wall face with distinctive wing-like pectoral fins. Caribbean reef sharks patrol deeper sections below 30 metres, while green turtles cruise the wall crest feeding on algae. The reef top is a busy neighbourhood of queen angelfish, French angelfish, Nassau grouper, and dense schools of horse-eye jacks. Visibility ranges from 20 to 30 metres during the dry season, and water temperature hovers between 26 and 30 degrees year-round. The current is generally mild, though occasional stronger flows turn the dive into a pleasant drift. Most Negril operators run morning two-tank trips pairing a wall dive with a shallower reef dive. Divers with Open Water certification can explore the upper wall, but Advanced certification unlocks the most rewarding depths between 25 and 40 metres where the largest sponges and best pelagic encounters await. For those already in Negril for beaches and sunsets, Bloody Bay Wall adds a world-class underwater dimension.

FAQ

How deep is Bloody Bay Wall in Negril, Jamaica?

The wall crest sits at approximately 12 metres depth, and the face drops vertically to well beyond 50 metres. Recreational divers typically explore between 18 and 40 metres, where the most impressive sponge gardens and marine life are concentrated. Advanced Open Water certification is recommended to fully appreciate the deeper sections.

Is Bloody Bay Wall in Negril the same as Bloody Bay Wall in Little Cayman?

No, these are two entirely different dive sites. Negril's Bloody Bay Wall is located off the western tip of Jamaica, while the more famous Bloody Bay Wall is on Little Cayman in the Cayman Islands. Both are excellent wall dives, but they are separated by several hundred kilometres of Caribbean Sea.

What is the best time of year to dive Bloody Bay Wall Negril?

The dry season from December to April provides the best conditions, with visibility often reaching 30 metres and calm seas. Summer diving is also good but brings occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricane season from June to November can disrupt dive schedules, though Negril's western coast is often sheltered from easterly swells.
