Belongas Bay
Kuta Lombok · West Nusa Tenggara · Indonesia
Belongas Bay is Lombok's wildest dive destination, a remote horseshoe bay on the island's exposed southwest coast where the full force of the Indian Ocean meets volcanic underwater topography. The result is diving that demands respect but rewards with encounters that rival any site in the Coral Triangle. This is not a place for leisurely reef exploration. It is a place where hammerhead sharks circle submerged pinnacles in cold upwelling currents, and mobula rays arrive in squadrons that darken the water above. The bay's underwater landscape is dramatic. A series of volcanic pinnacles called Magnet rise from 40 metres to within 12 metres of the surface, their dark basalt columns encrusted with soft corals and whip corals that bend in the perpetual current. The main pinnacle acts as a magnet for pelagic life, its summit providing a gathering point where currents converge and nutrients concentrate. Divers descend quickly to the pinnacle top, hook in, and watch the show. During peak season from June to September, the deep upwellings bring cold water from below 100 metres, dropping temperatures to 20 degrees at depth while the surface remains 27 degrees. This thermocline effect creates shimmering visual distortions and draws deep-water species upward. Schools of scalloped hammerheads numbering 20 to 50 individuals patrol the blue water beyond the pinnacles, occasionally sweeping close enough for clear observation. Marble rays and eagle rays rest on sandy patches between the rock formations. The mobula ray aggregations are Belongas Bay's other spectacle. Hundreds of these smaller rays gather in the bay during the upwelling months, forming dense schools that swirl in coordinated patterns. Snorkellers and divers share these encounters, as the rays often feed near the surface on concentrated plankton. Between the pinnacles, the reef structure supports a different ecosystem. Giant trevally hunt in packs along the current lines, dogtooth tuna accelerate through baitfish schools, and white tip reef sharks rest in crevices during the day before emerging to hunt at dusk. Napoleon wrasse of impressive size cruise the deeper sections with the unhurried confidence of apex residents. Belongas demands strong diving skills and rewards them generously. The currents are not for negotiation; they dictate the dive plan. Operators brief thoroughly, require demonstrated competence, and run small groups with experienced guides. When conditions align, Belongas delivers the kind of raw pelagic diving that Indonesia's more accessible sites cannot match.

FAQ
Why is Belongas Bay considered an advanced dive site?
Belongas Bay sits at the junction of the Indian Ocean and the Alas Strait, creating powerful and often unpredictable currents that sweep around submerged volcanic pinnacles. Down-currents and sudden temperature drops from deep upwellings are common. Divers must be comfortable with negative entries, rapid descents, and using reef hooks on pinnacle summits. The reward for handling these conditions is encounters with large pelagic species that congregate in the nutrient-rich flow.
When is the best time to see hammerheads at Belongas Bay?
Hammerhead shark sightings peak between June and September when cooler upwellings from the Indian Ocean bring water temperatures down to 20 to 23 degrees Celsius at depth. The cold nutrient-rich water attracts baitfish, which in turn draw hammerheads to the pinnacles. Morning dives tend to produce the best encounters as sharks move through the shallower sections before retreating to deeper water. Sightings are never guaranteed but this period offers the highest probability.
How do I get to Belongas Bay?
Fly to Lombok International Airport then drive approximately two hours south to the Kuta Lombok area. Several dive operators in Kuta and Selong Belanak run day trips to Belongas Bay, with the boat ride taking 30 to 45 minutes depending on sea conditions. The southwest coast is exposed to Indian Ocean swell, so crossings can be rough outside the calm season. Most operators require proof of advanced certification and a minimum number of logged dives.
