Batee Tokong
Sabang · Aceh · Indonesia
Batee Tokong is the marquee dive site of Pulau Weh, Indonesia's northwesternmost inhabited island, perched at the very tip of Sumatra in the Andaman Sea. This submerged pinnacle, also known as Central Rock, rises from the seafloor off the northern tip of Seulako Island, its summit reaching to within 22 meters of the surface before the slopes descend to 40 meters and beyond. The site's exposure to open-ocean currents creates both its challenge and its extraordinary reward. The underwater landscape at Batee Tokong is dominated by one of Indonesia's most spectacular gorgonian sea fan gardens. Beginning at around 15 meters and extending down the slopes, enormous fans and sponges create a living tapestry in shades of red, orange, and purple. Zigzag clams wedge themselves between the fans, and the rock's countless crevices and overhangs harbor what local dive operators call the moray eel capital of the world. Eels of multiple species peer from virtually every opening, creating a density of morays that is genuinely remarkable. The pinnacle's northern face features Shark Plateau, a sloping reef where current-delivered nutrients attract an impressive roster of sharks. Blacktip and whitetip reef sharks are near-guaranteed sightings, grey reef sharks cruise the deeper edges, and occasional silvertip sharks appear from the blue. Beyond sharks, the current-swept waters bring tuna, large trevally, schools of barracuda, and Napoleon wrasse, while green sea turtles navigate the calmer eastern slopes. Visibility at Batee Tokong ranges from 10 to 30 meters depending on current and season, with the clearest conditions typically from November through May when the northeast monsoon brings calmer seas to Pulau Weh's northern exposure. Water temperatures stay warm at 27 to 30 degrees Celsius year-round. This is an advanced dive site where strong currents can shift without warning, but for experienced divers willing to accept the conditions, Batee Tokong offers some of the most exhilarating diving in all of Sumatra.

FAQ
How do I reach Pulau Weh and the Batee Tokong dive site?
Fly to Banda Aceh's Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport from Jakarta, Medan, or Kuala Lumpur, then take a one-hour fast ferry to Sabang on Pulau Weh. Batee Tokong is a 20-minute boat ride from the main dive centers. Multiple dive shops on the island offer daily trips.
Why is Batee Tokong considered an advanced dive site?
Strong and unpredictable currents are the primary challenge. The pinnacle is exposed to open-ocean currents that can shift in strength and direction during a single dive. Combined with depths reaching 40 meters on the slopes, solid buoyancy control and current-diving experience are essential for a safe and enjoyable dive.
What marine life is Batee Tokong famous for?
The site is renowned for three things: enormous gorgonian sea fan gardens that carpet the slopes, the highest concentration of moray eels in Sumatra with eels in virtually every crevice and overhang, and regular shark sightings including blacktip, whitetip, and grey reef sharks at the northern Shark Plateau.
