Arashi Reef

Palm Beach · Noord · Aruba

Arashi Reef is the kind of dive site that proves a dive does not need to be deep, remote, or challenging to be thoroughly enjoyable. Located at the northern tip of Aruba just beyond the lighthouse, this shore-accessible reef sits in calm, warm water barely 12 metres at its deepest, offering a relaxed and colourful underwater experience that suits everyone from first-time divers to seasoned veterans looking for an easy afternoon dive. The entry from Arashi Beach could not be simpler: walk across the sand, wade in, and within a few minutes of gentle swimming you are over a reef bustling with tropical life. Parrotfish crunch on coral, blue tang drift in loose schools, queen angelfish display their electric blue and gold livery, and trumpetfish hang vertically, attempting to blend in with the gorgonians. The reef structure consists of scattered coral heads and small formations separated by sandy channels, creating a natural route to follow as you meander through the site. Despite the modest depth, Arashi delivers surprising variety. Peacock flounder lie perfectly camouflaged on the sand, spotted trunkfish potter about with their comically boxy bodies, and moray eels peer out from crevices in the coral heads. Porcupinefish, with their wide eyes and spiny bodies, are a regular sight, and the occasional southern stingray rests on the sand between formations. Arashi truly comes alive at night. The shore accessibility makes it one of the easiest night dives in the Caribbean to organise, and the transformation is dramatic: octopus emerge to hunt across the reef, lobster venture out of their daytime hiding spots, and sleeping parrotfish wrap themselves in mucus cocoons. Bioluminescence sparkles with every fin kick, and the beams of dive lights reveal colours that sunlight never reaches during the day. The site is diveable year-round in Aruba's arid, warm climate, and its position on the leeward coast means it is sheltered from the trade winds that can affect sites on the island's windward side. Visibility averages 10-20 metres. Arashi Reef is the perfect complement to a trip that includes the dramatic Antilla wreck nearby -- together, they showcase the full range of what Aruba's underwater world has to offer.

FAQ

Is Arashi Reef good for beginner divers?

Arashi Reef is one of the best beginner dive sites in Aruba. The maximum depth is about 12 metres, there is virtually no current, and the shore entry from Arashi Beach is simple. The reef supports diverse and colourful marine life that makes for rewarding dives even at shallow depth. It is also popular for Discover Scuba and training dives.

Can you snorkel at Arashi Reef in Aruba?

Absolutely. Arashi Beach is one of Aruba's top snorkelling spots. The reef begins close to shore in shallow water, and snorkelers can see parrotfish, angelfish, and even small rays without diving deep. The calm, clear conditions make it ideal for families and first-time snorkelers. Bring your own gear or rent from nearby vendors.

What is the best time of day to dive Arashi Reef?

Morning dives at Arashi Reef offer the best visibility before afternoon trade winds pick up. However, the site is also excellent for night diving, when octopus, lobster, and sleeping parrotfish transform the reef. The shore access makes it one of the easiest night dives in the Caribbean to organise independently.
