Aliwal Shoal
Umkomaas · KwaZulu-Natal · South Africa
Aliwal Shoal is a fossilized sand dune reef system stretching roughly five kilometres off the coast of Umkomaas in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Declared a Marine Protected Area, this underwater ridge rises from the sandy ocean floor to within six metres of the surface, creating a dramatic topography of overhangs, caves, and coral-encrusted pinnacles that supports one of the most diverse marine ecosystems on the South African coastline. The reef is best known for its extraordinary shark encounters. Between July and November, dozens of ragged-tooth sharks gather in the overhang formations known as the Cathedral and Raggie Cave to mate, offering divers intimate face-to-face encounters with these impressive predators. During the warmer summer months, tiger sharks cruise the deeper sections of the reef, while hammerhead sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and the occasional bull shark add to the adrenaline. The annual sardine run in June and July brings even more pelagic action, with dolphins, game fish, and Bryde's whales feeding in the surrounding waters. Beyond the sharks, Aliwal Shoal rewards divers with rich coral gardens hosting both tropical and subtropical species. Hard corals dominate the shallower Crown section at around 12 metres, while soft corals, sea fans, and sponges coat the deeper Ridge at 19 metres. Scorpionfish hide among the crevices, moray eels peer from holes, and octopuses change colour against the reef backdrop. Potato bass, kingfish, and large stingrays are regular visitors to the cleaning stations scattered across the reef. Dive boats launch through the surf from the Umkomaas river mouth, and the ride out takes about ten minutes. Visibility varies from 8 to 25 metres depending on the season and recent weather, with the clearest water typically found in winter. Water temperatures range from a brisk 19 degrees Celsius in winter to a comfortable 26 degrees in summer, so a 5mm wetsuit is standard gear. The site offers something extraordinary for every season, making it a year-round destination that belongs on every serious diver's bucket list.

FAQ
When is the best time to see ragged-tooth sharks at Aliwal Shoal?
Ragged-tooth sharks, locally known as 'raggies,' congregate at Aliwal Shoal between July and November for their annual mating season. During these months, divers can observe dozens of sharks resting in the Cathedral and other overhang formations. Some sharks are present year-round, but winter and spring offer the most reliable encounters.
What certification do I need to dive Aliwal Shoal?
Most dive sites on Aliwal Shoal range from 12 to 27 metres, so an Advanced Open Water certification is recommended. Some shallower sections of the Crown are accessible to Open Water divers. Boat launches through the surf can be rough, so some experience with ocean diving is advisable.
How do you get to Aliwal Shoal and where do boats launch from?
Aliwal Shoal is accessed from the small town of Umkomaas, about 50 kilometres south of Durban on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Dive operators launch rigid inflatable boats directly through the surf from the Umkomaas river mouth. The ride to the reef takes approximately 10 minutes.
